Eye Protection ... ??
« on: October 01, 2005, 07:42:54 PM »
I was riding through one of our large open air shopping centers last night
at all of 10 mph when one of the local "rent a cops" stopped me and
proceeded to inform me that the law says that if the bike is moving you
must have eye protection ( I had on a helmet but the visor was up).  I
thought he was kidding,  but later when I rode back the other way hunting
a parking space he was not so nice while making the same demand.

I always use the visor when "on the road" but a parking lot!  Maybe he was
just hassleing me like I'm sure he does the "crotch rocketeers" that show off
in the lot on Friday's.

Does anyone in Florida know what the law says about this?

Jim

Most states that require eye protection require it whenever the motorcycle is in motion, as long as the area being driven has public access. Therefore a farmer's field or other private property would not apply. However most parking lots have public access off of public roads or highways and therefore would apply. I don't know about Florida law but I suspect that's what's going on. Usually officers are allowed to make common sense exceptions, like slow movers looking for a parking space.

As for the officer involved, he might be a jerk. Just like some bikers are jerks. Doesn't mean we all are.

I know VA requires eye protection, but I always wear my glasses anyway.  I still haven't gotten around to buying a full face helmet since mine was stolen at a gig in 2000.  It's been the half-ster for me since then.  As for hating cops, c'mon.  I've had some jerks mess with me for the fun of it, but I've also had some that went out of their way to be nice.  Example:  My brother, who I sold my first rebuild bike to (74cb350f) decided he didn't want to wait to get it on the road for me to come over and clean out the carbs, etc.  He got it started and took if for a spin around his gated neighborhood (hated that place) and was pulled over about 2 miles from his house.  Why?  No tag.  When the officer asked him for registration he said "I haven't gotten it in my name yet."  Looking stunned, the officer asks him if he has insurance on it.  No.  "Do you at least have a motorcycle endorsement on your liscense?"  No!  "Just how many breaks do you expect me to give you?"  "As many as you are comfortable with."
My brother just doesn't get it that the cop could have taken the bike and him to jail.  Luckily he told my brother to push the bike home and not ride it again until everything was taken care of.  Can't say that guy was just out to hassle the young hippy on a bike, he was just worried about the idiot :)

James

Oh yeh, my brother took it out again a few weeks later and dumped it going about 35-40 arouind a corner when the engine stalled in 5th and slide the back end out from under him.  Cracked my helmet on the rock in the ditch where he landed, but he walked away with some minor scrapes and bruises and a new sense of what I had been telling him, go take the Motorcycle safety course before you try riding again!

Skamania is correct. I live in Florida and took the safety course when I bought my first bike. You have to wear eye protection. It's a good idea. Ever have a bug hit your face mask at 50 mph? It's like buckshot. By the way, my dad was a cop and he was and still is a really decent guy.

I eat no crow on this one...I have never met a cop I personally like...and I do not mean that one has never "given me a break".

I am not saying that there are no cops I may incounter in my life time that I may learn to like...I just havent met any yet...

I dont think that ANY human should be able to be ANY form of law inforcement without at least a four year degree.

I think that cops should be GREATLY REWARDED for ratting out thier coworkers when one of them breaks even the SMALLEST of laws.

I think that when a law enforcement officer of any kind breaks ANY law they should get 10 times the maximum punishment that a civilian could get for the same crime.

I am not afraid of the cops themselves, thier guns or their badges...but I am wary of the arrogance and malice when humans are given "power" over other humans.

WTF!
Man,  why on earth would you want to look at that S*&T. Furthermore, why would you want anyone else to?

Please don't give me the "free speech" answer, I'm no prude, but after clicking 1 link, I will have nightmares for days.

it is a unique site...I actually only read the "today in rotten history" section. I find it interesting. The "today in rotten history" section gives a breif summery of actual events that have happened through out history...some items of which are not commonly known...just a point of interest for me.

I also like www.theonion.com

and www.joecartoon.com is a very entertaining web site

...neither is like Rotten.com

----I would NEVER stoop so low as to hide behind the "it's free speech" smoke screen...I find that the stupid and uninspired use that phrase (ideology(?)) when they can not legitimately defend a preference of theirs in a forum such a a debate.

...However...I will change my "endorcement" at the first request.

You're right, Boffo. No one one should be given power over other humans. We should just have total anarchy. No laws at all. I'm sure we'd all be better off.

Sorry this is getting way from eye protection, but I must actually agree with Buffo on a couple of things. I HATE when cops are dirty and agree they should be held to a higher standard and receive higher punishments when caught and convicted. And I hate when cops turn their heads when they see other cops doing wrong. They shouldn't be rewarded for turning them in though, it should be what they do without a reward. I was issued a citation a couple of months ago because I was driving with expired tags on my car. Forgot to renew them, they were expired by 45 days when I was stopped. I could have probably gotten out of it by flashing a badge, but didn't. He was right, I was wrong. (Had them renewed within an hour though.)

Now I think I'll get back to reading about the other thing we agree about...motorcycles.   ;D

Just to add my penny worth on the old rozzers. On my way home a few minutes ago (I work late) a police car pulled out a side street yards in front of me. He stopped half way accross the junction and I stopped just in time (Chuffed to bits I wasn't speeding). I thought these guys went through advanced driver awareness courses. Granted it was 0330 and we have a very quiet community but don't they always expect the unexpected.  >:(
