What to pay for a '72 CB 175 ??????????

I've had my eye on an all orginal CB 175 for some time.  It's got about 4000 miles and hasn't run in several years.  It's in ok condition.  From what I can tell, it is definately salvageable, but if the owner waits any longer to sell, it may not be worth putting money into it.  It's been sitting in a garage for as long as he's owned it.  He doesn't want to sell, but I thought I'd go ahead and make him an offer.  What do I offer???  I thought about $200 since it's not running.  He's a friend so I have to be reasonable when I negotiate with him. 

Any major issues with the 175's other than the normal Honda issues from that era?

Last spring I was passively looking for a small-bore bike,  First swap-meet of the season I spotted a near complete example, dirty and not running, but a one owner bike. The guy was asking $200  I walked by an hour later and he was showing it to someone...I overheard him say the engine was stuck but he wasn't going any lower on the price.  Tank was rusty too.  Maybe $200 isn't that bad of a price.  Make a list of what's salvageable, and what's not. And honestly think about what you want to build it into...resto or custom? a track bike?  Then decide if it's really worth a $200 investment before work begins.

The small bikes have a little bit of a cult following, but like anything, it depends on what you want to pay vs what the owner wants for it. If he already doesn't want to git rid of it, you may have to offer him more than you think it's worth.

For example, this is a nice little survivor, but I'd never pay his asking price.

I have a little 175 that needs the carbs cleaned and a battery with some minor paint work.  It is a clean survivor with original exhaust.  I am asking $525 for the project and expect $1200 when it is finished on feebay.  I paid $250 for it and a parts bike. I had to apply for a lost title and now have it titled in my name.

Hard to make a judgment without a photo, but $200 is basically parts bike money, so it's probably worth that.  If it is one that is basically complete such that you'd have a decent runner with a carb clean and tune, it's probably worth more like $500.  Something that is very nice and runs well could easily fetch a grand and a really nice one might even go to $1500.

Those little bikes are gaining popularity with the "baby boomers" who remember them as teenagers so here in Godzone they easily go to $900 Kiwi.
I'd def pay two hundee for one that was a fixer upper.

I think I saw some stuff for a 175 in there....so if you buy it this might be an opportunity to get some parts for cheaper.  I think it is a no reserve auction.  They send parts UPS and the cost is what UPS charges with no markup.

I'm looking to get a small twin myself.  It would seem that a $200 buy in would probably be easy to recover from simply by partingit out.  I don't want to get inot too much of a project, needing to source parts and such so I am willing to pay more for a clean, complete bike.

These are the factors I weigh on any Honda I buy.  What is the condition of the seat, tank (paint and rust inside) gauge faces, spokes (rusty or loose), original exhaust and overall conditin of the hardware (rusty bolts etc) and chrome.  This i my guide.  If I found a bike I wanted with all of these things in decent shape, I would pay easily $500 even if it doesn't run.  YMMV

theres one for sale on my local craigslist, i offered him 150 for it. it's all there but has been sitting for 31 years he says. i'm thinking a race bike build then sell it to someone that doesnt weigh more than the motorcycle  ;D
