I've been looking at a few helmets on line that look good. I'm just afraid of getting one shipped in and it not look like the picture... any suggestions?

suggestion?  you are a young guy with many years of riding ahead of you. Your lower face is the only one you have. Take care of it.
I know you didn't want to hear that. ;)

What upperlake said, ditto. Temperature should not be a reason to compromise safety.

I suspect that this is possibly going to degenerate into a 'right helmet, wrong helmet' debate.

Suffice it to say that anyone who chooses to wear an open face helmet stands a significant risk of facial/jaw injury in the event of an 'off'. One third of all incidents end up with trauma to the face and jaw.

Modern full coverage helmets come in such a wide variety if 'fits' that there are very few individuals who cannot be comfortably fitted.

You can get over that claustrophobia easily. First you flip up the visor under 40mph and just ride around. You will get used to the foam pressing on your cheeks. When you get over 40 mph just lower the visor to about nose tip level. The air flowing will make it feel open to you. When you get to highway speed just lower it and leave it open a crack at the bottom.
Having a full face will save your mug. You are a bit fuggly, but you deserve to have a face.  ;D

BobbyR, I keep looking at your avatar and telling myself it's not a self-portrait. :D

Hey 75, this is what I'm looking at...
http://www.saferacer.com/hjc-cl-21m-helmet.html?productid=1083
It's not *quite* a half-lid, it comes down to just past my ears, but not all the way down my neck... These ride really low and since I wear a size XS (I'm really, really just that small) it's one of the very, very few helmets like that that don't give me mushroom-head syndrome.   It's also one of the few half-3/4 helmets I'd feel ok with, but I do feel a little claustrophobic in my fullface, too.  They're light, they're vented, and best of all, they're DOT compliant.

I wear a flip front Nolan (Italian) N100E on longer trips, I like the flip front because I can, well, flip the whole front of the helmet (not just the visor) so I can take a drink, blow my nose, have a smoke, (if I was still smoking) adjust my glasses, or walk into a gas station without being asked to remove it. The good thing is that when the flip front is down, it's a full face, with all the protection you'd expect from a quality full face helmet.

http://www.nolanhelmets.com/n100e.htm

But I do like the idea of an open face lid for short trips and commuting, particularly in warmer weather, (like now, it's summer here in Oz) so I wear a cheap open face lid, but the more I look at these Nolan "shorty's", the more I like them, once again, Italian quality, and a good look. Those HJC's look OK too, but the prices are similar, so I'd rather buy Italian than Chinese, any day.

Cheers, Terry. ;D

also, just to throw something else in there, i wear glasses and cant wear contacts, they irritate my eyes... so being able to see would also keep me safe...
and Kit, i have also looked at those 3/4's as well. not sure. like i said i'll probably have both. open face for scooting around town and full for longer trips...

good insurance.
Or a full face helmet.

Seriously. the lower half of the face takes more of the % of damages statistically.

I wear glasses as well.
With a full face helmet it's a PITA, but I deal with removing my glasses every time I got to put my helmet on or take it off.

I'm not saying you gotta wear one or the other.
Just the full face is safer.

...actually, if you have to wear glasses, go full face or modular. I'm only going with the hjc (or nolan!) because I can do the goggles or gasketed glasses thing. My eyes are pretty sensitive, too.  My other helmet is a modular, and that is nice.

I have survived crashes with both the 3/4 helmet and full-face: the full face helmet let much less dirt/grass/rocks into my mouth, for sure. :-\
