ART vs. Honda NOS pistons?
« on: January 16, 2009, 04:01:12 PM »
Gathering parts for a rebuild.
I've found both ART (Rocky) and NOS Honda piston sets. The Hondas are, of course, more $$$. Is one set better than the other? Any pros/cons or preferences for one or the other?

Thanks

Grumpy

You must mention the bike so everyone with a 400, 550, or 750 can chime in accordingly.  ;D

I have a 550 and currently have the stock 58.5mm pistons, a set of Rocky 59mm, and a set of Yoshimura 59mm pistons.
Just out of curiosity I weighed all three to see if they are close.

Stock 550 (58.5mm) pistons and pin, without rings or clips = 160 grams.
Rocky 59mm pistons and pin, without rings or clips = 170 grams.
Yoshimura 59mm pistons and pin, without rings or clips = 152 grams.

Visually the Honda & Rocky pistons look the same except for weight. Yosh are hi compression pistons with raised tops and larger valve pockets.

Oh, and I'm not going for a big-bore rebuild.
Just .25 over to get it running right, again.
