Opinions on Dual Disc Forks?
« on: January 09, 2009, 11:32:18 AM »
A well beaten subject....but did not find what I was looking for.  :'(

I want to put a dual set up on a new cafe I am building and I have the option of early K forks or 75 F forks.

As I see it the early K's (69-72) are good....except they always have that booger rust up between the yokes. ( I have one mint fork tube...but have never seen another and I don't think they are available now)

The F forks (have a pair of these) are alot purdier up top....but I don't have the calipers or hangers and I figure they might be a tad harder to find seeing as they were a comparitively smaller market bike. (750A had them too)

Third option (not too serious) I have a mint 79 front end that I can put a cb450 front hub (drum) (Yes apparently the K wheels don't fit on the 79 fornt end...I tried a mock up)
But the stoppers would probably not be up to the task....but it would look cool  8)

Opinions or any other options ????

The bike is a mid 70's custom cafe CB750.

Thanks

Steve

I put dual discs on my '75F--pretty straight forward.
Had to take about a half inch off the collar that drives the speedo.

Putting dual disc on K0-K2 forks requires a special Unobtanium mirror-image mount for the right-side caliper arm.  Dual discing later forks is way easier.

I'm running a '79750 dual disk front end(minus rim and tripple trees) on my cb650.
Lined up perfectly.
Probably one of the easiest mods I have done so far.
Definitely worth the stopping power.

Mystic hit the nail on the head.... i searched for quite a while for a caliper mount for my 72 for the right side....
never found one.

Although.....Kevin (aka TT400 I think)  has my left side caliper and is machining matching left and right versions.
he is planning on selling them on his website....  might be a while though...

Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

You can take a standard bracket and shorten a boss thet is too long then space the one that is too short with washers but it dont look as purdy

I had a buddy? that ran a 72 with duals..cant remember if he modded the stock hanger or biught a kit back then..

If you run 73 -76 forks, you get..
-easier miunting, with cleaner looks
-fork tubes that are hard chromed to the top and dont rust
-are able to change fork seals without removing the whole fork (if you get the allen bolt out).

Way easier to live with, IMO

Re SS forks, I dont like the look either, may trim some ribs, but I am probably going to use them to try to mount radial calipers on..

Whats wrong with the "slippery sam" setup?
http://paintingsofbikes.com/sdp406_SlipperySam.html

Anyone know of any drawbacks to this setup?

am i mistaken, or isn't the front brake setup on the F0 the same as the K2-8? those parts are in abundance.

Why not go with a 75GL 1000 front end?

Why not 77/78F forks?  Don't like the looks?  My current build is gonna be running a set of 'matic spoked alloy rims on a set of '78F forks.  You just gotta space the calipers inwards about 1/4" each side and make an axle.  Haven't got the speedo mount figured out yet though.

+1 on the GL Goldwing set-up.  I love it with the beefier tubes and dual discs.  Cheap too.  The whole triple tree and all slid right into my 74 K model frame.

1 thing to consider, the 2 F discs weigh less than one CB disc. So no matter how much you drill or thin them you aint ever going to get close to that weight. that may matter to you or not.

That's what I did. I used the early wheel/early axle but did a lot of other work. It works nice. ;)

Thanks for the comments guys.

I am pretty sure the 75/76 F caliper and some of the hanger parts are particular to that bike...or the 750A.

I didn't think the 69-72 dual disc was that tricky....but sounds like it may be.

I guess I'll try to get some F parts for the forks....or keep an eye out for a 75/76 wing setup.

Steve

no, the 75-76 F brake parts are the same as the K parts for that year (and previous years up to 1972). The F forks seem to be longer (I have an F and K front end standing next to each other in the garage) but not by much and it could just be that my K front end is worn out. It is 77-78 F brakes that are not interchangible with anything else. On american bikess the front fender is different also but on european F0/f1's it is the same as the K.

Another thing you could consider is this. If you go with 77/78F forks you can mount the later dohc 750/900 dual piston calipers IF you also use the mounting brackets from the same calipers. I'm upgrading my dual disc brakes on my 78F by doing this. This is a direct "bolt on" with Comstars...don't know what mods you'd have to do for spoke wheels.

Mick, do you happen to know if the '77-78 GL1000 forks will take the same DOHC brake setup as the Late "F" forks? The bracket centers seem to be the same.  Thanks!  RR
