Fresh paint on sidecovers
« on: January 22, 2009, 07:59:21 PM »
I know painting comes up a lot and I had my share of questions regarding this so Im posting whatever/whenever I can to help out those seeking some tips.

I painted my gas tank the same as the sidecovers.

Materials:

Harbor Freight "purple gun" model 43430 - regulator at the gun set at 50 lbs
21 gal compressor with regulator set at 90 lbs
Used PPG Shopline (budget paint) single stage black, medium hardener, fast reducer

Sprayed the first coat light but wet, waiting about 10 minutes for the paint to flash, then applied two more coats with 10 minutes between those coats. Paint flowed really well with very little orange peel. I let the paint dry for 2 days, then wetsanded (lots and lots of water) with 2000 grit until all same color.

For the tank I used my rotary buffer and 2 rounds of 3M rubbing compound for the first initial cut. Super glossy already, then used my orbital buffer and Maguiers Scratch X (a little goes a long way). Man, that stuff is awesome. Use a microfiber towel to wipe clean and reapply until youre happy. Then use Nu Finish polish to wrap it all up.

The pictures dont do the sidecovers justice, but here they are:

Left one is wetsanded, just before getting buffed.

Those sidecovers would look really nice on my K7 or K8 - I need to see how my new tank is doing too ;).  ahem, I mean, I'm sure you're all practiced up and ready to do another round, right?

Seriously, I'm in the same boat as WFO.  I just wasn't sure what to buy in terms of a gun.  I have a collection of tanks and sidecovers in various condition.  I'm feeling inspired. :)

Are you ok with more questions and a request to get this stuff made sticky or put in the FAQs?  I know very little about painting and will surely ask plenty of dumb questions.

Regards,

John

Nice work Man! Thanks for the post. I am not sure about the paint thing, but I must say you have given me some inspiration to perhaps give it a try.

Thanks for the play by play on how you made it happen. It looks beautiful, I may give it a try.

Thanks everyone. I've since gave the sidecovers about 8 rounds of the ScratchX and the paint just gets deeper and deeper. Looks great.

As far as the purple paint gun goes, make sure it's the HVLP gun model 43430. There's a gun that looks just like it, but will be worse with overspray.

I've also had great luck using the mini detail purple gun to paint my headlight cover and speedo cases. Only difference with this gun is I set the pressure around 30 lbs at the gun, everything else the same.

Please ask any questions and I'll try and answer.

Thanks again!

Pretty! Just sent out 3 tanks 3 headlight buckets and some side covers to the paint booth.
If they look like that I will be surprised and very pleased. Nice work.
