Seat Swap
« on: January 26, 2009, 05:20:40 AM »
I'm new here, so sorry if this has been asked a million times...

I have a 1978 CB750K. Will the flatter style seat from a 1976 model fit on my '78, or do they hinge on opposite sides?

Thanks.

There were major changes between the 77-78 750's and 550's and the 76 and older bikes. The 76 seat will be too long by about 1-1/2" I beleive. Don't know about the hinge though.

Thanks for the info.

Is there and aftermarket supplier who offers different styles of seats for these bikes?

That scraps the swap idea, in that case. Thanks for the info.

I like the cleaner look of the flat seat on the '76, much more than I like the slightly stepped seat on my '78. But there must be an aftermarket supplier who offers a range of styles for each year of these bikes, no?

What does the underside of the seat look like?  I kinda have the K8 look with the flat seat here:

Yep!

It looks to me like the step is in the foam only, and not in the pan.

Although Mossy will probably send a hitman out after me, if I swap out the original and pristine '78 stock seat. That's why I'd like to keep it, and just find an aftermarket soruce for a flatter seat.

Yeah, you're probably right.

And the seat that's on her will probably be more comfortable, anyhow.

BRG, you are better of finding an old 77-78 (only seats that fit that bike plug&play) and send it to an automotive upholster to shave the foam and reskin, like PXTX did. I know one in Seal Cove if you are interested, he just redid this one for my father-in-law's (1981 CB750 DOHC).

Having said that I like the two up style,  helps me from falling off on launch !! ;D ;D

PS: I was the guy who could not deliver your bike on saturday night due to a previous engagement...sorry about that. Long as you got her...that's the main thing.

cheers

there has to be a million post about this in the archive...really...search function

69-76 and 77-78 hinge on opposite sides. I have a 75K where both mounts have been welded but you could use a bolt on style mount like the F's used if you really really wanted to pull it off without welding. You could also use bolt on stainless hinges in the pan to change sides, I think classiccyclecity (i htink that it the name, the guy here who makes the guilari seats) has the hinges in stainless.

overall the 76 seat is smaller than the 77-78 but the mounts have it further forward to accomidate the shorter 69-76 tank, were you make your own mounts you could relocate the seat to fit the tank, but in the stock position the seat will be too far forward.

the cheapest and easiest option would probably be to shave the seat foam flat and recover it. YOu could have a shop do it or try your hand at it yourself.

No sweat, Jako. I felt better about getting one of my buddies to help transport the bike, anyhow.

Geeto...

Thanks for your information and input.

I wondered how long it would take you to figure out that I was threatening to mess with the seat.

Yeah, Mossy installed a braided steel line, which is nice, but dual discs would be good.

My next mod, I'm thinkin.
