Short fork tubes = shorter springs?
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:35:14 AM »
So in my search to get low, I have run into a question or 2.

I am planning on getting -2 shorter fork tubes for my 78 750F. I have run into the question of do I need to get shorter springs? I assume that if I use the stock springs it is going to ride real hard. What have some of you guys done? Is their a source for shorter springs up front?

Why not just slide the tubes farther up into the tree? As a rider with short legs I needed a way to lower the seat height. I have moved the forks up by as much as 2" on my F-2's with little problem, I don't remember any interference issues and didn't find the slightly steeper steering head angle an issue. Another way to 'shorten' up the forks was to put spacers in them, we did this on dragbikes but you may find the spring preload excessive. I've ridden with both of these methods. For my raked custom the spacered version didn't let the frame sag so much but was harsh.

Basically I like the look of the shorter fork tubes rather then sliding them up. I think it makes it look cleaner. Just my opinion.

I'm not a 500/550 guy, but aren't the forks from one of those compatible with a 750?  just a couple inches shorter, springs and tubes??  I think I remember a member mentioning running a 500 or 550 fork setup to keep things low without slipping the forks up in the trees.

These two threads might help a tad if you have not already searched and found them.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
