500/4 was launched in 1971 - "M" registration was Aug73 - Jul74

Right Steve first 500 was Feb 1971, at least that was the date on No36 and you have to guess that was first day of production which was "J" reg but officially did not get to the UK till later, I think "L" was the earliest non import i saw but happy to be proved wrong

You guys are, of course, totally correct. My 73 CB250G5 was a 'M' reg. I should have titled this post 'intro ad in 'Bike' magazine.

As I've posted elsewhere Bryan, the bike in my avatar was NGK62L and was registered in 1972, unfortunately I don't have any documentation left that gives the date.  :'(

My black 500 is CJF937K (24th April 1972)

Steve, if the one you have now is not an import it must be one of the first brought in by Honda UK. Its a long time ago but i cant remember working on a "K" back in 75 onwards but i do remember "L's"

Bryan, I'd love to say that it's an early UK bike but I just don't know. I have no history before 1980 and only "5 owners since 1976" on the V5. Date of DVLA registration is definitely 24/4/72

As you recall, it has a K2 engine CB500E-2154931 in a '72 frame CB500-1015277

If dvla have a date of registration it was when they first did paperwork so it must be UK, I would be tempted to find some NOS unstamped engine cases

Very nice Dave, I have 2 "J" reg 500's but they are both imports! so could the "K".

Only way is to see the V5, but if it was imported before they went fully computerised its not on there as an import.
If a vin plate is fited on RH side of headstock its definately an import but conversly just cos there isnt one doesnt mean it isnt. No 36 wont have one as it melted when it was set fire too
