Over the next five years or so...
« on: December 12, 2008, 02:17:34 PM »
So, last night my wife asked me what I would like Santa to bring me this year.  I told her that I would like to build a new Hot Rod.  But not another bike.  This time it would be a car.  I told her that my plan would be a long-term build of or around five years.  Just sourcing the parts over the first three to four years and the assembly over the last.  She asked what kind of car and I showed her this picture.  Her reply:  "That is beautiful!  You better start your parts search."

The plan is to start with the chassis this year, the body next year, the engine the following year and the interior after that.  The assembly in the final year.

I am looking to keep the project under $35K.  It should be easy considering that I really want it to be a Rat Rod.  Not a show car.  Most of the money will be spend on the chassis and engine (crate engine).  I am looking to source a steel body, but may have to settle for glass because of price.  I want the engine to show, so I won't need side panels, just a hood.  No fenders either, just painted steel wheels with center hub caps and white wall tires.  As for finish of the body, I want it to look like the paint has aged.  Interior will be very bare, aluminum bench seat, floor, and door liners.

sounds like a hi-boy.
How about a flathead V8 with 4 or 6 deuces--Stromberg 97's of course.
I happen to have four 97's that I could part with.

I plan to buy a rolling chassis because of the modern engineering and construction.  To build a 32 using "real" parts would set me back close to $100K as those pieces are far a few between and have high price tags.  My thoughts on a glass body have been nixed.  I will go with steel for a few grand more, this way I can get the look I want... like this:  It looks like a survivor but is 100% modern and new.

What about some jute coffee sacks over the upholstery. Just a thought. They come in great colors and designs if you're prepared to look.

There is a local brew pub about a mile from my house.  I know the owner and can get jute barley and hops bags from him.  hmmm.  Might be a neat idea.

What's the $$ tag on something like that?

The best steel body about $10K
The best rolling chassis about $8-9K
Crate engine depends on who builds it, C.I., and HP desire.  My price range $7K which is a turn key engine.

Here is the chassis: http://www.deucesteel.com/ds/images/products/Custom32detail3.jpg

My racing partner built the engine and the car... it's a 468cubic inch 500hp big block... with a Roland 5 speed... weights in just under 2000 lbs...  so it's a little squirrelly ....

but always fun to drive...

Hence the need for those wide rear tires. ;D

I would love to have a 500HP engine, but for now I am planning on around 350-380HP.

Five year plan put on hold this week.  My wife and I just bought a new home.  With a 20% down payment, all of my '32 Deuce money just went into my new home.  Oh well... the Hot Rod will have a nice new oversized two car garage with additional workshop to sleep in.  Now the fun begins - MOVING  :P  Yuck!
