upper tripple tree fab ques.
« on: January 19, 2009, 06:03:27 AM »
in my adventure to mount clip ons to my 77 cb750f, I would like to modify the original upper tree. I would like to eliminate the raised pieces that hold the OEM handle bars. I was all ready to cut the off, then noticed that there hollow. Are these aluminum? Could I cut and grind the section not needed and then have the refilled with alum. (sancast). Do any years come with solid upper trees that could be cut and smoothed?
Thanks

Don't know for sure if that'll answer your question, but it's a start.  I seem to remember someone else doing it on a 550/750, but I'm not dedicated enough to do the full on search for it.

checkout earache motorsports in Indianapolis, IN. He's a site member who milled my handlebar mounts off and filled the the back of the tip triple--very nice work

They're hollow?  what a pain.  I'm not 100% sure but I think I've got an upper from a 78K that's solid.

yup, hollow.  the early type was less hollow, but still lots of space to fill up.  Maybe one could fill it up with alumaweld, or HTS-2000 or some other product like that?

Here's mine. Off of a 400f with the hollow problem.

But if you can find pictures of this members bike, he cut his top tree bracket down and
he's reported No problems or structural weaknesses.

Cheers

That's the early style Mateo flipped, cool idea Matt! I didn't figure it'd fit, but there it is...any mods?

After seeing this I have been conemplating doing myself.  If you plan to lower the front forks I would imagine the reverse angle of the top clamp to help "hide" the extra fork tube?!?!

Alan, you brought up an interesting idea with that alum weld product. I think I may mess with it today. Might just have it welded and sand smooth.

I didn't think there would be enough strength left if I took the bar mounts off completely, so I removed what I considered to be safe, and fitted some solid dural rivets then spent a v. long time hand sanding and then polishing. Just need some fully adjustable Tomassellis
