Need to replace chain, want to replace screws on sprocket cover
« on: January 18, 2009, 09:48:01 AM »
Santa brought be a chain for my bike, and I want to replace the screws on the sprocket cover with allen bolts.  Has anyone ever bought the allen bolt set from Cycle Recycle for their 550?

If not, what is a good source for the allen head bolts?

Must be a good hardware store if they have that in metric.  Most don't.  I am not familiar with Cycle Resource, but converting to allen's is cool.  I have bought some from the dealer where I used to work.

Soapbox time.  Please tell me you are doing the sprockets as well.  Chain and sprockets wear at the same rate.  If you do one without the other, it will wear the new part in a fraction of the normal wear time.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Most hardware stores now carry metric. You just have to look as they stash them away behind the standard. They are just denying the inevitable.

I get all my stuff from these guys - you may not find the exact length, but you'll find something close.
I'm partial to the button head allens, myself - I think the regular allens look sort of Franken-bike.

FYI - for those of you who have switched to the allen heads on your bikes, Sears has a T-handle set marked down from $24.99 to 6.99 in some of their stores (not all of them).  Here's a link to the set that is marked down:  http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00942284000P?vName=Tools&sid=I0084400010000100383&aff=Y

I might swing by and get a set even though I have plenty L shaped allen tools.

Quick question: do these allen screws allow you to put as much torque as needed?  I've never used allen screws much and am a little curious.  I don't want to end up with loose or rounded off allens.

They can depending on the design of the head. If the head has a lot of metal and the sides of the hex are not thin, you can do a lot of torque.
