My New Bike...a 1970 CL90 Scrambler
« on: January 21, 2009, 07:15:14 AM »
Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to say i'm going to post some progress pix of my clean up of my New to me 1970 CL90, originally the Previous Owner listed it as a 1969 in the craigslist ad but after some research it was a 1970 model, which does not matter really, anyways does anybody know where i could find info on how many units honda produced of this model? I'm very excited to learn as much as i can about this bike as i always wanted one when younger and it finally happened.
ANY info would be greatly appreciated.

Bill -

Sweeeet !!!

I have contacted Honda directly about ths issue, and have been firmly told that all sales/production figures are strictly proprietary info - nothing I could say swayed them.
It didn't matter that I was asking about 40-50 year old models, same answer form them.

Go figure......

I thought the CL100 took the place of the CL90 in 1970?

But WTF do I know?

Artfrombama,
Me thought that too but my title says otherwise!?!? the guy who sold it said it was a 1969 also?? i do not think he knew what he had?
There was a bike just like it and what he was selling it for floored me, i've always wanted a CL90 but nEVER saw any and was hoping for an S90 when i spotted this one.
He sold it to me for $300 which i feel was fair as it is very clean and original for the year bike it was. Here is the AD for the other guys bike:

I'm super anxious to get her running Saturday morning!!
Thanks,

Artfrombama,
You might be right about the CL90 being a 1969 as in researching on www.cmsnl.com , it said they were made until the end of 1969, granted my title is a duplicate from the DMV but i was trying to research WHEN this model was made from and until so i knew a little bit more about it..i'll keep researching, and i saw your post(s) on Vintage Tumper Talk, which i will check out from time to time
Thanks Bama

Doug -

You can't go by the title on these old bikes - typically, they were titled as the year they sold, not the year they were produced.
What does the VIN on the bike frame say??

Judging by that VIN#, and per this site, it's a '69.

It's a situation similar to the CB450 4-speed (Bomber), where the production run covered several years, with no "K" series designated, and no deliniation between years/serial numbers.
So I'll have to go with Kirk, it's probably a 1969.
Since Honda will not release production or sales numbers on any of their bikes, no matter the age, that's as far as I could take it.

Sorry I missed this one earlier. I've been down with the cold - pretty rough this time too.

Bill, I've gained a lot of weight since I could "into" one of those. Now it's more like "on them - all over them".

Yep, I do have a sweet spot for those. I do remember being 11 and thinking my S90 was about as good as life could get....

I would have guessed 1968/69 based on the tank and round badges. It looks a lot like my old CL175.

Gordon..do you have any pictures to share of the Old Singles?? I've been out cleaning the rims and fenders with WD & 3M scotchbrite real lightly and the battery is on the charger & i dug into one of my old parts boxes and found some rear pegs i kept...for whatever reason and fit them up along with a license plate frame..ah it feels great just cleaning her up and Saturday i'll clean the carb and add some gas, put the battery in and see if it fires! It has great compression and shifted thru the gears smoothly
Thanks

Doug, I really don't have but that 1 single - the 1966 S90. My 1973 DT3 Yamaha Enduro is single, but probably not what you were looking for. Bill knows I have a soft spot for the old Hondas. I've managed to find exact copies of the S90, CL175, CB350, CB500 Four, of those I had growing up. I've restored and collected several more since, but those will always have a special place.

Good luck this weekend on getting it started.

Gordon, sure hate to hear that you'd been down for a bit. We've had some of that "crud" going around here too. I've been lucky enough to have missed most of it. You take care of yourself. ;)

Yeah, I knew you'd like to pop in here and check this one out. 8)

Well i went out to the garage and pulled the battery i had charged overnite and it won't hold a charge, so i'm going to have to run out and get one later, It did clean up rather nice and i still need to clean the carb so i'm posting some pix in the mean time, it has very nice compression but all the reciepts show small items like clutch cable, seal, gaskets etc. so i think it might be stock bore?!? The guy who sold it to me said it was his girlfriends bike and she must have been a gearhead somewhat because all the reciepts are signed by her and she kept a folder for the bike with research on tires(I don't know if i'm boring you guys but i like a lil history) and she was the 2nd owner, it came with a smudged shop manual(she must have wrenched too!) and  the orignal owners manual, the only thing it doesn't have is the tool kit which i'm going to try and find. So overall i'm really happy and i'll update after i get the battery and clean the carb. Oh yeah, i found an old set of rear pegs which fit but arent exact factory units..but hey..they are on ebay. I have the original air box and filter set aside.
Good thing i'm not superstitious because the license plate is unique and I LIKE James Bond movies.

Drag a piece of sandpaper through the points, then set them to .014" (at the highest point). Put a dab of white grease on the point cam.
Cool bike. I lusted after one like it when I was a kid. Be sure to stick a breather on the carb before you do much riding.

Doug, get an air filter on there of some kind. It won't be standard bore long and that good compression will leave town in a hurry without filtration.
