Well I have gathered a lot of parts, but between school and 6 kids, it has been hard to update much. I am still fiddling with the chemical process for copper plating, and chrome removal. Any help from someone who works in a plating shop would be greatly appreciated.

There is only one within a three hour drive from my home so shipping/gas increases the cost. I have actually been researching all morning and have decided to set up my own apparatus for copper plating, around 100 dollars and I can plate whatever the hell I want to. ;D

Link to home plating info?

It is kind of scattered all over the net. No one wants to tell you how easy it is, or how cheap it can be. All I heard when I went to the plater is what a pain the environmental issues are and how labor intensive polishing is. Then he told me I couldn't polish as well as them, but hey hes never seen any of my work so were did he get off telling me that. I have plated things on accident in some hydrogen experiments I was doing a few years back. It is a simple electrolysis process. The hardest part is getting the solution right, so the stuff comes out the way you want. Also you have to be very careful with the chemicals, sulfuric acid, muriatic acid, lye, and copper sulfate are all very harmfull. but they are all common chemicals found in household drain cleaner, root killer, and soap making.

Here goes, copper plating experiment #1. Making copper sulfate.

ingredient #1, Battery acid. (diluted sulfuric)

ingredient #2, copper. (pre 1982 pennies)

ingredient #3, DC voltage. (battery charger)

Battery acid from Checker auto parts. 32oz each

The setup in a very clean plastic bucket.

Flow is positive to negative, notice the pennies are on the positive side.

64oz of sulfuric acid, and power.

After thirty minutes, the blueish hue is copper sulfate.

Okay it's been two and a half hours.

Notice the darker blue, also the cathode (negative) has a very dark color as compaired to the anode (positive), it is hard to tell from the pictures but the dark color is actually a large deposit of copper approx. .05 inch thick normal copper plating is usually .003. so things are going well! now to see if it is just powder or actually a hard coating.

What amperage did you use for the battery charger?  I have a 6 am/ 2 amp.  That looks interesting.

Anyone know how to "Bronze" something?

Every metal has a different method for making a solution, battery charger is a 6/2 to make the copper sulfate I used the 6amp setting. For actual plating I will use the 2 amp.

So the buildup on the cathode is powder.

Object about to be tested.

Cathode with most of the powder washed off.

Object after thirty minutes in the bath, the powder wiped right off.

I know you have to do layers when plating.  Is Copper the first layer? or the Second?  I know you need Nickel in there somewhere when doing chrome.  I thought it was Nickel first, then copper.

Success!  I added 1/2 cup lemon juice, and 1/2 cup 35% HCL (Hydrochloric acid). I think I needed to clean the object better because the copper is a little blotchy in some areas. But I scrubbed the heck out of it with a kitchen scrubber and polished it, the copper stayed on

It turned green with the lemon and HCL.

Wow only thirty minutes and look at all the buildup!

One of the most important steps when dealing with acid is baking soda, about 3 tablespoons to one quart of water. Not only do you need to neutralize the acid on the part you just plated, but it can be a life saver if you get the acid solution on your skin. So make some up before you start!!!!!

The pictures are hard to see, I polished the copper and it caused a bad flashback, I'll get better pictures when I actually plate a part for the bike.

I know you have to do layers when plating.  Is Copper the first layer? or the Second?  I know you need Nickel in there somewhere when doing chrome.  I thought it was Nickel first, then copper.

Copper is the first, then nickle, and finaly chrome. The nickle is what gives chrome it's color, chrome is just like a clear coat/hardener.

No but when I was accidentally plating things while making hydrogen, I plated a car key.
Edit, I just looked at the link, yes I did see that.

Awesome info, thanks for the step-by-step.

Your welcome, stay tuned for more! ;D

A better picture.

Awesome experiment/project :o.  Thanks for posting your findings on this stuff.  I Cant wait to see how the final product works on your pieces.

I would assume that your planning on clear coating the copper plated items while they're still shiny?

Cant wait to see more.

When chrome is done, they first clean the object within an inch of it's life, then copper plate it, usually twice to make sure there are no imperfections, then nickle, which as billy said is what you see because the third step, the chromium, is actually a translucent metal.

You could actually put chromium over the copper plating to give it that extra WOW!!!

Any info on the solution for chrome plating? From what I have read in the past, chrome over copper is were the whole black chrome thing started.

Wicked!!

Somehow missed this until now.
I had thought of doing nickel plating.... but copper can get some really good looking finishes with the right patina applied.

Lemon juice is a bad Idea! I went out to the garage and found a murkie white cloud in my copper solution. It apears as though the lemon and the HCL have reacted with each other. Now I have to filter it out. :(

So here is the petcock I got in the mail yesterday, I have refinished it with some polishing, paint, and copper plating.

Before

Before copper plating

The picture I took. (remember I'm horrible with camera's).

After some help from my wonderful wife! Not to shabby.

There is some things I have learned in the last few days about the plating process that are important. I will post these new findings later tonight when I have more time.
