K2 750 cafe' ????????? now without fork tubes
« on: January 21, 2009, 08:22:59 PM »
In the interest of keeping my word, I am Starting my build thread today. However seeing as how I was in the emergency room last night with a broken right hand, all I can do is list parts plans and pictures for the next few weeks.

So here is the plan, originally I had planned on your average run of the mill 836, 16" back tire, dunstall style seat blah blah blikity blah! I myself am kinda getting tired of them. I want to be somewhat origional.Don't get me wrong I love cafe's I just don't want what everyone else has.

Goals:

1) Build a cafe' style bike

2) Make it look "vintage"

3) Be original

4) Inexpensive

5) It has to look right! (none of that weird 1000RR exhaust going up thru the back section or anything like that.)I cant find the thread on that one, kudos for originality though.

Now I made a bold claim yesterday in the Inspiration Gallery that I was going to build a reverse head exhaust out the back, ram air cafe'. After some research that isn't going to happen this year. I just don't have the kind of cash that will take. It will be mine, oh yes....... It will be mine, just not right now.

I'll upload pictures as soon as I can.

Hmm, #4 gits ya.

Flat black rattle can
sporty looking tires
clip the fenders
Clip ons or clubmans
Cut the foam in the stock seat.
Slide the tubes up the trees a bit.
4-1 exhaust.

There ya go, an inexpensive cafe-ish bike.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I'm glad ER doctors can be wrong sometimes. I went to the Orthopedic surgeon, and he said the bone fragment in my hand was from an old injury.

Here we go some pictures of the humble beginnings of my build.

Personally I'm a fan of tank hugging so it will have clubmans, rearsets are suppose to help with that I've heard.

bondo sucks, i'd suggest getting a better filler, it'll save you a lot of headache

What do you suggest.

I'm a sheetmetal man so most of my bondo work is very thin. the seat right now is just foam and bondo. after I decide on the final shape it will get covered in fiberglass and the foam/bondo will be removed.

Evercoat fillers such as Rage and Rage Gold are good, they're more expensive, but worth it

So I think I'm going to take the forks and rims into the local plating shop and have them plated in copper. Paint the tank and seat red and the frame black, I cant quite visualize it tho, any thoughts?

Might be a bit much.  IMHO copper and black are a great combination.  Perhaps paint all of the bodywork black with copper highlights/graphics/pinstripes/racing stripes/you name it.  Red and copper are both warm colors, but too far apart on the spectrum to coexist harmoniously (if color theory does not elude me completely).  I love the copper, though.  I saw a Swiss watch the other day which was copper ceramic (matte black) and aluminum (gloss black) with mits of brushed metal peeking through.  HOT, man, HOT!

I agree I decided this morning the bike will be black with copper rims, forks, and clubmans. copper pinstriped tank and seat, I'm leaning toward the racing stripe but wont know for sure until I get everything together. lots of polished aluminum. as little chrome as possible.

Edit, forks will not all be copper just the tubes, lowers will be polished.

Edit, I'm thinking of copper plating the exhaust to.

A little polishing I did the last couple of days on some tripple trees I got from the local wrecking yard.

After the sanding

Well shiioooot, I went to the local plating co. and told him that I didnt have a whole lot of money but I had time so any polishing work that needed to be done on the metal inbetween chrome removal and copper plating I could do to save labor. He told me that I was not able to polish the way they want it done????????????? Am I just the local retard or what? So I guess I will be trying my hand at copper plating, I will document with pictures.

I have never plated profesionaly and dont know everything about it, but from what I have read online. 100 bucks is a little steep for one wheel. I was hoping to do two wheels, fork tubes, clubmans, and bar end mirrors for that. He quoted me 400.00. Not chrome just copper!

There is only one within a three hour drive from my home so shipping/gas increases the cost. I have actually been researching all morning and have decided to set up my own apparatus for copper plating, around 100 dollars and I can plate whatever the hell I want to. ;D
