I'm really interested in that copper plating.

I'm going to have to give that a try.

let me get this plating thing dialed in and then we will see. ;D

I will be attempting to plate my fork tubes, mirrors, and handle bars this week, after I do them I should know if I'm comfortable doing it for someone else.

That's kinda what I was hoping, it might give it more of the vintage look that I'm going for.

It's starting to look like a real bike now.

The tank obviously needs to be finished, I put it on just for my own motivation.

I'm watching this one!!

I love copper.  I was thinking a pretty nice combo would be a brushed copper and brushed aluminum finish.  I also polished some parts and I was torn between leaving the brushed look of the 600 grit sanding or polishing it with the buffer.  I wonder if copper would look as nice with a matte type finish on it.

You'd have to clear the crap out of it to keep it from turning green. polished is easier to care for, but brushed would be sweet.

I planned on clear coating my copper, I think if it were brushed and clear coated it might be ok.

Sorry Havoc,

Aluminum is very reactive with the first solution, It dissolves it and creates hydrogen gas, also sulfuric and hydrochloric acid will dissolve the aluminum so I don't think it would be a good idea to use my solution for plating valve covers as it has to be in the first solution for about 30 minutes and the second for about 3 hours. There would be nothing left to call a valve cover. But your local plating shop could probably do that, they have all the closely guarded secrets.

Aluminum in a caustic soda (lye) solution, this is the first bath I would use to plate steel or nickle.

Lye reacts with,

   Aluminum
   Magnesium
   Zinc
   Tin
   Chromium
   Brass
   Bronze

To create hydrogen, in the process it dissolves the metal. Some it takes longer then others, the electricity speeds up the process.

I know, I wish the solutions were not so guarded I might be able to cook something up. I know from talking with the local plater that there are two kinds of copper solutions, Acid which I am using, and cyanide which I will not use as I have 6 curious kids at home. But he said that the cyanide solution only does a thin coating where the acid solution will do a lot thicker coatings.

Krixxer works at a plating shop I'll see if I can get some info from him.

cyanide is also used in gold plating for circuit boards etc.  That's all I know.

This is my new plating set up, and I relpated these damn clubbers all day with about the same result! :P

Right out of the tank.

After I cleaned it. Very blotchy.

I am getting frustrated now! I guess this is why the platers get paid the big bucks.

I am almost there though.

WOW!!!!!!!! sweet thread. Very educational. When i used to work for a car dealership to pay for college, we had this small machine for gold plating the chrome emblems of the brand new cars, and when the boss isn't looking i would gold plate my snap-on wrenches. Cool machine but the fumes were very toxic.
