I'm running out of time here, I am going to have to put this thing together as is and copper plate one peice at a time. This sucks, I have to be riding before may 11th.

Sorry Havoc,

Aluminum is very reactive with the first solution, It dissolves it and creates hydrogen gas, also sulfuric and hydrochloric acid will dissolve the aluminum so I don't think it would be a good idea to use my solution for plating valve covers as it has to be in the first solution for about 30 minutes and the second for about 3 hours. There would be nothing left to call a valve cover. But your local plating shop could probably do that, they have all the closely guarded secrets.

Aluminum in a caustic soda (lye) solution, this is the first bath I would use to plate steel or nickle.

Lye reacts with,

   Aluminum
   Magnesium
   Zinc
   Tin
   Chromium
   Brass
   Bronze

To create hydrogen, in the process it dissolves the metal. Some it takes longer then others, the electricity speeds up the process.
 


For aluminum you want to anodize it.  It is a very similar process and can be done at home.  I have an article detailing this in a boatbuilding magazine but it is buried at the moment.  It works the same way, a sulfuric acid bath, DC current and a piece of scrape aluminum for the cathode.  The neat thing is the oxide coating is porous till it is heated and can be colored using regular clothing dye in a solution at a low temp, around 140 degrees.    Afterward the part is sealed at a higher temp, around 180 degrees.  You can also get dyes specifically for anodizing though I am sure they cost more.  All the details can easily be found on the web, I am just remembering this from reading the article many years ago.

So thanks to some great advice from Krixxer (Thanks), here is the end result on the clubmans. And to think I was on the brink of givving up on the copper plating until winter comes again..... patiance I just needed some patiance and to give it another try.

My Idea:
I Have a F3 with the black Motor. I Had Planned to get my Tank and every other chrome piece on my bike Copper plated this winter, Run Spoked wheels, Copper the rims and black the spokes with white walls. I called the plater with my tank at the last minute and changed my mind on the project and decided to go chrome on this bike and get my hands on another bike to do my "Black and Copper bike" The reasoning was that i didnt have the time or the money to get every thing copper'ed and clear coated before riding weather. I was also skeptical of how the  tank would look copper with all the other parts Chrome til i could get the money and time to finish it.
Surprisingly enough your bars look pretty good next to the tripple trees.

After about an hour and a half the caps were nicely plated but the tubes were grey, corroded an a lot smaller then the are supposed to be. Where the mickle stayed on the tubes there was a deep ridge and deep pits. It also looks like my solution is contaminated.

I have a set of 750 forks if you need em. I'll trade you straight up for plating my risers??

Its 1:00am just got in from the garage, got the tank painted, handlebers shortend, controlls put on, mirrors on, swing arm painted, and installed. Pictures another day.

I have GSXR rims on my project and i am thinking of using the "mirror chrome on them, i was going to get them polished so it would save me having to polish the alloy all the time.

Hey, a few people have pm'd me wondering where i'm at. I'm still here.


After a few trips with no seat... its very fast!

Some of you may remember a few months back when some doctors told me my hand wasn't broken, well they were wrong. I had surgery a few weeks ago and have not felt like typing on the computer all that much. The good news is I think it will be well enough to finish my seat next weekend... I hope.


It feel a lot better then it looks.
