Bob, what are you talking about? We are discussing oil here and that dot3 is BAD dukie! :D

Cafe, the drinking part was a poke. Of course after I read it again, I saw that it certainly comes over harsher! I certainly agree that rampant capitalism is bad. Look where we are now for proof! you do use the wrong oil though! Any oil that is not my oil is bad! :D

well I can clearly say I don't discriminate, I hate them all big and small.
I'm a poet and didn't know it.  :P
I will say this that it can be balanced, I buy oil from Oreilly's and at adavance auto, I get spark plugs from wallyworld or adavanced auto which ever comes first, I have four kids and a wife living off my little income, and my kids eat like goernment mules so I HAVE to shop at Sam's club. I do have a garden too and live the old ways that I was raised on, so yes we can food and pickle food too.... Yummy. ;D I do search alot though and almost have a formula for what fluids I get from where depending on antifreeze or oil or brake fluid. I also watch for sales in the paper and start from there.
Man this one started slow but after everyone tested the water here come the belly flops! ;D
I will have a vegetable stand at the farmers market this year in Liberty, and am getting ready to plan the layout of my 30ft x 75ft garden for this year too.....So I too am part time little guy....

I am as much consumer as the next guy, I mean I love buying &h!t, I really do, but we all (I know, freakin HUGE generalization) need to consume a little less AND re-learn how to produce some things.  Growing vegetables, selling/bartering handmade furniture, re-building and selling old bikes, whatever...that's the strength this country once had and NEEDS to find again. It's time to re-think mindless, endless consumption. So take that bi-haaatches. Is this done yet?

I agree with that completely. The decay really started in the 80s with reagan. Farmers went under left and right. Economy changed to where more and more families had both parents working with less time to tend a garden or teach their kids respect and such. it continued through the late 80s and early 90s. it got somewhat better under clinton but not enough and then the last 8 years really broke it all down. Sadly, things will probably break down much further before it comes full circle. If I had a choice that was real, I would not go to walmart. not cause of the products and such but because being around that many people gets me all itchy.

Five pages ago a member asked a technical, bike related question. If socioeconomic and political views to be expressed, shouldn't they be done in another forum?
Well Mr. Gribbs, i expect you thought i was being a pr1ck with my first post about oil relaated threads. Well here you have it.

Back to topic then???

In my Kawi 750 Turbo I only use Kawasaki 20w50 Synthetic with Kawasaki factory filters.

In everything else I use 20w50 natural oil changed every 1000 miles with stock filters.

mmm, filters... a whole nother can of worms

I have a Terry special spin on filter adapter and I used HiFlo filters last year until I tracked down a case of K&N's at a reasonable price and I now use them (for at least 2 more years at this rate of 3-4 a year). I have used the K&N air and oil filters on my cars for a long time including my 2 current 100k+mile cars, I don't know how much difference they make, but I like to stick with known quantities if ya know what I mean.

No matter what motor oil you run, insure it is motorcycle specific. The biggest cause of motorcycle motor oil breakdown is shear - the molecular shearing that occurs between the transmission's gear teeth.

Off the subject FYI:

Yes the blow-by gasses combined with crankcase moisture (induced from the breather) create sulfuric and hydrochloric acids, but these are neutralised by the additive packages which are measured by TBN.
The oil's TBN (Total Base Number) being reduced to 1/2 it's starting value is a good rule of thumb for extended life changes, oil analysis from reputable labs always show this in addition to wear metals. In general, an oil with a higher zinc content will carry a higher TBN, (like Delo 400 - NOT LE TYPES) but there are other factors involved as well. Zinc content is VERY important for wear reduction, but due to federal emissions regulations and truck catalytic converter issues, the requirements of SJ and CJ-4 oils (LE low emission) have caused drastic reduction of zinc in the additive packages.

I personally have Frontier Lubricants (Lodi, CA) in everything I own after reviewing thousands, and running hundreds, of fleet oil analysis while I worked for them. And no they didn't give me free oil.
There are many others that are very good as well...

The K&N oil filters for your car are virtually identical in construction to Mobil 1 with the exception of the filtration media sizing, the K&N allows a higher micron particle to pass. This becomes important for increased oil flow volume without by-passing at very high RPM.
For normal driving I use and would recommend the Mobil 1.

Are you espousing the virtue of Mobil1 oil or filters at the end there?
I use strictly Mobil1 oil in my cars, but I heard not too long ago there were issues and recalls with their filters.

I was refering to the filters only - but if there are issues of recall going on... ???
I've used, then tested mobil 1 oil from my Silverado - analysis shows it's not the be all / end all some folks think. It's not bad stuff, but I didn't feel (in my application) the company's extended use mileage claims were prudent based on TBN drop.

So you bought the "motorcycle specific" bit huh? All that is, is just a ploy to get people to spend more money. Save yourself a wallet full of cash and get a good diesel oil. It will do EVERYTHING a "motorcycle specific" oil will. It has the increased zinc, it has awesome detergents and lasts a long time against shear and heat. At half the cost.

If you change your oil within a reasonable mileage, most of these things should never be an issue
We never tested high sheer load motor oil applications while I was there. The 20w-50 Frontier was produced specifically to address this issue, but minimal sales volume and expense led to it's discontinuation some time before my arrival.
The gearbox specific oils were formulated to avoid the long chain molecules, and while the chemist explained the process to me, even in short form it was mentally overwhelming - as well as being proprietary.
The Delo 400 diesel oil is a good one that comes to mind for non catalytic applications, provided it is not the 'LE' (low emission) type. It was the basic standard others were compared to for customer reference purposes. When used in automotive applications, the higher zinc content oil had a noticeably positive effect on flat tappet cam and lifter wear!

Since we are talking oil. Should I use a different oil on my guns in the winter than the summer. Is there a difference between oils for revolvers vs semi automatics.  ;D

I would bet there is! You need a good coat in the winter to prevent rust if you do not shoot! Revolvers can use a heavier oil since it is all about finger strength! :D

I use the mobil 1 that comes out of the drag car. It only has 10 miles or so on it.

Thanks, would you recommend synthetic? I was using Gun oil, but maybe I am spending too much.  ;D

Pennzoil .. preferably straight, but had to resort to multi weight the last decade, due to availability.

Will have the results of my 25 yr test, soon, that was Pennzoil only.. NEVER anything else.

Forks, usually 20W or ATF for most street use.. 40 wt if on the strip a lot.
