1000 mile ride
« on: October 04, 2005, 05:32:54 PM »
took a ride this weekend with a friend on a sportster, feel sorry for him,so sore he can hardly move.but the old honda ran smooth and comfortable even running 80 mph most of the way.i had forgotten just how good of a machine these bikes were.most of my rides are alone and not as long as this one but all in all what a smooth machine, thumbs up to mr honda.and the blues bikes and bar-b-q was great in fayetteville arkansas.saw just 1 other 750 and it was a supersport.my old honda kept me talking with all the riders, humm to think about no one talked with my friend on the sportster imagine that.

Re. no one talking to your friend...i love that. None of my friends ride vintage, so I often find myself out with a pack of Ducatis and SV650s. People always approach me to talk to me about my bike, but no one ever talks to my friends about their bikes. There's really nothing to say about them, once you finish the conversation about the monoshock upgrade.

It's not the gurl factor, since we're all gurls.

I keep reading on this site about stories like yours.
I didn't believe the first few, but now I have to.
Here, if I mention owning a bike, the unfailfng response is,"is it a harley?', so I don't bring it up anymore; it's too predictable.
None of these "afficianados' are bikers either, I might add, just hearing the name dropped everywhere.
I envy you, Sixshooter.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

I have a few relatives who constantly ask me if I will be arriving at various events, parties or whatever on one of my "hogs". Of course many of you know that I have a CB750F. I also have an Elsinore and several Yamaha 2 strokes.
They just can't seem to understand what a hog is.

As far as the stories told by sixshooter and cbchik, I often attend bike nights or cruise nights where there are many Hardleys and many times there are people asking questions about my bikes or just stopping to chat about them. It can get even more interesting when I bring my 750 and my friend bring his '76 CB750F, parked right next to each other both in original paint.

Saw a funny T-shirt worn by a Harley guy; "Bikers are a rare breed. Harley riders are a dime a dozen"

I'll talk to anyone. Interestingly, it's usually the Harley folks who are most interested in my old Hondas and Beemers. I think the Gus might scare some people  :-*

on this trip saw lots of bikes hardly's and others that were truly works of art.over 20,000 bikes at this event.i love bikes regardless of what brand they are.just like to poke a little fun at the newer machines sometimes, trying to get even with the folks who ask why i dont buy a new bike.my answer is why whats wrong with the one i have.by the way the sportser did get a little better fuel mileage we filled up about every 100 miles and the sportster held about 1/10 of a gallon less on each fill up.the drag pipes on the sportster were louder, not knocking the american made bikes at all.
about 10 years ago i hit a deer on another bike i owned 76-750 supersport i think.my wife made me quit rideing, just started back recently so i am kind of out of the loop.quit rideing what was i thinking.anyway haveing such a wonderful wife she realized how much i enjoyed rideing and gave me permission to resume, thank god.

have a nice day

No apology necessary, I can't even remember who my fourth grade teacher was.  ;D

I no longer mind riding with my Harley friends.  The CB 750 gets more attention.  All their bikes look alike and my SOHC represents  many fellow rider's first bike, or like me, the bike they wished they had in high school.  Sportster's, I believe, are even looked down upon by other Harley riders.

I'm always having people come up to me and talk about my old Hondas.  But I also get the same experience with my Ducatis.  I recently stopped at one of our establishments that caters to the Harley crowd.  This older gentleman came up to me and complimented me on my Ducati SS, saying what a pretty bike it was.  Then I finally got the comment I've been waiting for, for quite some time.  He commented that there must be something wrong with my transmission as it sounded to him like the gears were not meshing properly.  I told him that the sound was perfectly normal and was coming from the dry clutch.  I was told that this would happen some day.   ;D  Anyway, here's the bike he was commenting on.
