first street bike,, 1982 cb650,

1982 cb650
$200 (cad) sat outdoors for 3 years with gas and battery in it ,,tried to start after quick gas tank cleaning and new gas,, seemed like low compression,, lights and everything worked so without even doing comp test i just jumped the gun and tore it down,,lol,,
stupid me....but was mainly purchased to do so for learning purposes,, but would of been nice if it ran,,
well anyways tore it apart to find out that nothing seemed out of order (no actual measures taken)
besides what damage i created while doing so,,lol,, broke head bolt, pistons got all rusty from sitting in damp area,, broken a ring when trying to clean them up, broke a little bit of cooling fin when splitting cylinder from crankcase,,lol, im sure the list could go on,,,,
anyways about to try and start putting back together after sitting for a year so decided to join here and perhaps gain some knowledge along the way,,

i think im going to go kinda half assed about it as i am currently laid off work and have perfect time to do this but not the perfect cash flow,,
so im thinking just clean up as i have already taken the carbs apart and cleaned everything with gas, and brush,,(miserable ,,i hate little springs very much now) cleaned the head same way
now just to purchase new head bolts,, cylinder and head gaskets and piston rings,,
hopefully that will do,, but im sure the reason it would not start to begin with is electrical,, but maybe not (fingers crossed)
1. if i replace the rings do i have to have the cylinder honed?
2. could i do this myself with a drill and proper stone attachment?
3. also just wondering what would happen if i decided to try and save 100 dollars and just replace rings on just one piston and reuse the other ones??

just wanting to get the bike running in the most cost effective way,,for i could be spending more on stators or rotors etc..most likely gonna need tires,, shocks ,,etc,, anyways im just blabbing away here sorry ,, if you took the time to finish reading then please take the time to offer up some advice to a noob,, :)

here's pic of bike identical to it except the exhaust is black on this one and mine is chrome,,
everything else looks just the same and same condition but the one in the pick runs,, :(

check out my rebuild thread by searching "total newbie".  My first bike is an '80 cb650, but from what I'm learning about the electrics on these bikes, you might see some commonalities.

To be brief, I didn't hone my cylinders, but wish I had. Compression would probably be higher.  I didn't replace my rings, either.  I had high compression initially, but lower once everything was taken apart and reassembled, probably due to cleaning off the carbon deposits.

You will want to replace your rings for optimal performance, especially if the pistons were all rusty.  Mine were in relatively good shape.

When doing the carbs, do yourself a favor and go to an electronics store and get a little bit of regular copper speaker wire, cut and strip out a single strand of that copper.  Should be hair thin.  Use that to clean your carbs, along with brake cleaner (I use Brakekleen)  it won't leave deposits, will be relatively gentle on the rubber bits, and should be quite effective. Clean ALL those little passages.  be very careful to check your diaphragms for pinholes, too, especially around the edges.

If you search under '650' you will probably also find a thread where TwoTired explains how to test the resistance of these alternator rotors, regulator/rectifiers, etc.  To say 650s have problems with their electrics is kind of an understatement.

Don't forget your M/C and brake caliper either. Mine was a regular rider for a college student a few years ago, then sat for a couple years, and still, it looked like there was peanut butter (crunchy style) in my master cylinder and caliper.

Good luck to you, these bikes pull like freight trains when they're running right!

theres lots of help abounding here.

Don't forget to use the search engine, as a lot of things you may be curious about have been discussed before.
Glad to see another 650 here!
