'72 CB350 rebuild begins. Help!
« on: January 25, 2009, 01:07:22 AM »
I finally started on my '72 CB350 that has been sitting in my garage for almost a year. Only thing I've done so for is strip the frame down to bare metal, and I built up a engine stand. Tonight I drained the oil to see how bad it was and... the drain plug was almost a 1/4 full of metal shavings! Awesome right! So my plans of a easy build are kind of out the window. I guess I'll be learning how to rebuild an engine. I have zero internal motor knowledge, so I will be asking plenty of questions on this forum as well as a couple others.

My first question is what kind of stuff do I need to look for?
What parts will I need (most likely) need to replace?

This bike will be a daily rider, and I usually stay in the fun zone of the throttle, but I'm no racer. Any and all tips are appreciated.

I've posted some stuff on my teardown over on the hondatwins.net site. If you want to take a peak I think I'll be posting there more, for this project. Here is the link. http://www.hondatwins.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=518&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

Just had a look but not a member there, thing on right of clutch is the centrifugal oil filter which is suposed to be cleaned out every 9,000 miles from memory.

Remove the circlip

there is a thread at the bottom (6 or 8 mm) get a long threaded bolt and screw it in, this will pull the centre part out

Clean out the crap (techical term) found in there and you will find a nut requiring the special peg spanner to undo DONT FORGET THE TAB WASHER.

you need a new cam chain and tensioner assembly WITH ROLLERS and possibly the cushion

Piston play be more specific

Does it slide sidways on the pin or lift up and down (VERY BAD)

If its up and down the big end is gone which means a new crank, i think Dave Silver had some NOS ones a while back but make sure its 350 not 250
