there is a difference on the higher priced helmets, but some are just overpriced because of the name. go with a scorpion, good quality, decently quiet, and well in your price range. newenough.com has some on clearance for under $100. I think a few are like $60!

+1.
If you do get a Scorpion don't get the kind with the second drop down inner sun visor.  It adds quite a bit of weight and it's not worth it.  I speak from experience ;D  I don't think the ones of newenough.com are that model though.

this is what I'm rocking right now... it is an affordable Sparx helmet. it fits my glasses nicely and of course matches the color scheme of my bike.

my dad has an old helmet like this I'm going to pick up next time I'm home and repad and see if I cant get it shiny again. I love the look.

there's a lot of research that's gone into helmets saying that if they're more than I think 5 years old, the shell and padding is toast. ...so even if it was DOT back in the day, it's probably not up to snuff anymore.  ...not that that stops a lot of people.

mine was NOS so the padding is flawless ... not that it would stop me from wearing it ... my helmet is really more for looks then anything else    (and to keep the wind out of my ears)

yeah, as a helmet ages the foam and everything else will break down and not really absorb like it should, making it a pretty sweet paperweight ;)

didnt mean that you are better off without it, just that if you are counting on it giving it all the protection it can, you are mistaken.  I am a big fan of being geared up, have the full face helmet, leather gloves, pants and jacket (all with padding, sportsbike style) and wear my heavy workboots.  boots are next on the list :)

I would say that a 5+ yr old helmet is going to save your head if you go down. Will it be destroyed in the crash...maybe...will it save your head...most likely. I have no problems wearing a 5+ year old full face helmet and yes I have crashed twice in my 20 year riding career...helmet worked very well both times  ;)

Not arguing with you per se as I agree on the gear aspect but dont kid yourself into thinking it will save all injuries in the event of a crash...it wont prevent broken bones and legs being bent back at odd angles or arms being torn off....these are the risks we face..gear will of course help prevent many road rash scenarios and will save you from some terrible injuries...just not all of them.

Safe riding,
Andy

oh, I know. Trust me.
Still, there are some definite ironies out there that p!ss me off.  One is a local leather shop MickeyX and I frequent.  They sell 'novelty' helmets they put a 'DOT' sticker on at purchase.  Every time we go in, there's a huge glass jar for 'downed rider fund'.  That's cool.  What wasn't cool was a downed rider fund for a guy who was wearing one of their novelty helmets when he went down, and at that time was 'not looking good' due to nasty head trauma.  The writeup next to the jar said he was a great friend of the shop, etc etc...
...but to this day they continue to sell those idiotic novelty helmets.

It just seemed so wrong that a friend of theirs is nearly killed in one of those things yet they continue to stock them. Guess that's what freedom is all about.

In NZ where helmet law has been in for about 35 years anyone selling non compliant helmets would be sued out of business by the government as injuries here are all covered by ACC which is a kind of no blame all encompassing insurance for everyone.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

All covered ins Seems to be afoot here as an idea as well. ???
The fact that you cannot orchestrate a crash is the variable. The helmet just has to work that one time. I know a man who flipped over the car and landed on his head. Helmet popped like a peanut shell, he walked away fine. It worked that one time. :)

I was clipped by a car 27 years ago, it was a hit and run, my bike hit a culvert {drain }and threw me off and i hit a tree with the side of my helmet, it tore the helmet off and broke my jaw and fractured my skull. This time the helmet didn't do so well but i would never ride without one..

haven't read all the replies so I'm sure someone else mentioned this, but you can't look too sexy if you're retarded or missing part of your face.

I used to be stupid and just find old ones at the thrift store and paint em.

thing is I actually ride my bikes. every day in traffic. and lanesplitting full time. just a matter of time before it happens so I want to be prepared.

I decided black full face with dark tint visor actually looks a lot cooler than anything else anyways.

half ass helmets indicate that motorcycling is not a priority for the person wearing them, to me. I figure, 'oh he rides an hour a week so he's not worried about it'. at some point practicality has to make your decision for you. or you become a vegetable and don't have to worry yourself with decisions anymore.

that being said my best riding buddy wears a stupid pudding bowl. to each his own.

and of course I am quite good looking, so I have a reason to protect my face. can't say the same for my friend. ;)

+1 for HJC CL-15, mine's the graphic called 'ORBIT'
it's pretty good, but a little quieter would be nice.

Week 1 ended in a win for the Chargers, but after watching the game, what are you most concerned about moving forward?
