Looks too big to be a 400 size. Looks more like a cb900 to me but the pics kinda suck so you never know.

400 or so TwinStar? Basically the shift version of the CM400A Handamatic it looks like.  Worth 900 painted and running.

It's a 1981 CM400T, would be my best guess.

The engine just seems too large but then it is a side view and not a front.

I'd agree with the others and say CM and not CB.

Yeah, the step seat and teardrop tank are CM. I have a CB, they have a flat seat and CB400F style tank.

geeto, a lot of people say the same about our bikes! ;) Granted the title part would certainly be a pain.

Nothing I want to buy without a title.  I think it's fun to figure out.

Beware Thread Hijack: I see in your avatar you have a tank with the petcock on the left side. What year/K model is it?

75-76 (and some 74) 750Ks used the threaded bung style petcock like on the F bikes and had it moved over to the left. It screws me up everytime I go from riding my 75 to my 73.

I've owned cb400t/cm400s - it really is nothing you want to buy title or not. As mentioned in another thread here they are cheap bikes if you want to do something that might screw up the ibke permantly (like leanring how to port heads) but honestly, they are total dogs, at least a cb750 is somewhat fast.

Well it IS a 400! A cx500 is nice though but they are very distinguishable!

Well, the 2 CM400 project bikes my son and I restored together are far from "total dogs" as Geeto calls them.  Not a very nice thing to say to a guy about his ride, but you are entitled to your opinion.  Those 2 project bikes were a great first time learning experience for a father/son project.  I would not have traded that time with my son for anything...even if it was only the CM400.  Here is a pic of the 1980 to burn your eyes Geeto.   ;D

no matter how nice a bike looks you can't take away from the fact that they are slow. Nothing is wrong with slow, some people like slow, but I am not one of those people - hence the bikes are dogs. You have done a very nice job on the bike restoring it with your son and I am sure the two of you learned a lot but none of that makes the bike any faster.

They are perfect for:

- learning to ride
- learning to work on bikes without previous expirence and without fear of ruining something valuable or expensive
- general disposable bike duties
- reliable commuting transportation when speed or coolness is not an issue.

outside of that they really are not anything special, and are boring to ride. Plus for $400 you can usually find running titled examples in pretty much any major city. As far as performance, maybe you are right, to call the cm400s dogs is an insult to dogs everywhere.  ;D

All bikes put a smile on my face.  I ride a Honda Spree moped when I really want to relax.  CB750's somewhat fast ?  Wow. A short time in the saddle of a modern sport bike may just have you thinking "dog" when you get back on the ole CB.  Nothing wrong with any of them..... ;D

I own(ed) plenty of new sport bikes, yes they are fast and some of them are boring also, but at least they are fast. Slow and boring...eh...not for me. The cm400 is a robust bike i'll give it that, but really after having owned one and a cb400t as well I wouldn't ride one now.

Thanks, Geeto67 gave me the answer I was looking for. I'm dealing in the K style bikes.

I agree Geeto...nothing wrong with being a little slow... ;D
However, I was able to buy and sell 2 of those and turned a profit of over $1,000 on each of them.  That is the advantage of the CM400.  We have a cycle school in town here and the bike sells like hotcakes when the class ends.  Hmmm, slow but fast, but mid day fast, or slow mid fast during mid afternoon, or mid slow to upper slow on a mid fast 750?   ;)
