replacing starter button
« on: January 27, 2009, 09:53:24 PM »
While installing my clubman bars I managed to disconnect my starter button.  I believe I did this while pulling the wiring through the bars and disconnecting them from within the housing.   I know they are connected in the crows nest of wiring in the headlamp tub.  I don't want to mess with getting the factory button wired back up...because I'm lazy and because I want to get a cool switch to mount either on the cluster or on the head light bucket.  Just want to get some ideas from anybody on here who has suggestions.

Also how about a pic......I know the seat looks like hell!  It was my first go at it...

That skyline would look better if the old fountain was still running and without the haze. I can't see the flying fairy on the Humana building.

Run by and see Bob at Magnum's on Dixie and see if he can help. Just tell him Drug Man sent you by. He can also tell you how to get in touch with Kevin on that side of the river if you need mechanical help.

Seat, what seat!?  ;)

i have a switch from K-4 that i plan on using to replace my starter switch. the switch is a momentary switch-- push-on, normally off.  this one almost fits into the stock button location. the housing needs a bit of gentle filing or sanding inside for it to fit. pop the boot onto the switch and most would be none the wiser. it looks like it will also work for the horn button also. i seem to have misplaced the lower portion of the switch housing, so i can't give you the full effect. it seems like i well sealed switch, so i wouldn't worry about the elements too much, especially with the outer boot. it won't necessarily relocate your switch, but it is also small enough you could locate it in a inconspicuous location for added security. well, it may buy you a few minutes until the bike is kicked over. if you were to go down to your local NAPA and look in the Echlin Illustrated catalog there are plenty of push buttons, rocker switches, toggle switches and what not that you could make work. obviously you will want to momentary switch. anyone who sells Standard ignition will have the same selection, but i am much more familiar with the Echlin catalog. K-4, and cole-hersey are other brands to look for. you may already know this, but there may be someone who doesn't, for forgive my digression.

later,

ryan

I nearly bought a sweet little CB350f last year and when I asked the owner what the funny green button on the headlight bucket was he explained it was the starter button!
Must be damn easy to wire one there eh. ;D

Cool idea.

Like those big chrome "Start" buttons they fit on Aston Martins nowadays!

I moved the starter button on my old CB750 to under the right side cover. This way it was hidden from view, and I was also able to pull the clutch in and use the other hand to start the bike if need be.

I fixed my starter button the other day (been kicking it for a year :D ) and found my battery is getting ready to take a dump :P

I remember watching Biker Build-Off once some builder put the start button under the seat cover near the tank, nobody would ever find it there and it's out of the weather.

I put in a little simple SPST push button from radio shack years ago. It was pretty small and mounts in the hole the original button pokes through. It still works fine. I lost the headlight cutout function but don't miss it. Maybe this is still available? It has open spring contacts in the back.

You need to check out how the button works, I expect on that bike for it to ground the yellow/red wire to the bars---later bikes powered the yellow/red whilst turning the headlamp off

You could solve the headlight cutout issue by having the starter button drive a SPDT relay.  Wiring to the relay would be like the stock starter button - NC contact drives the headlight, NO contact drives the starter relay.
