Yes, saw one behind a house on its side last summer.  It is about 1:00 in the afternoon.  Owner was in a local bar according to his mother who was watching the pit bull and the ex-con grandson from the porch.  Granddaughter walks out, stoned, but gorgeous, and half dressed.  I find the guy, we strike a deal after some drunk talk on his part and I load it up with the help of some kids hanging out on the street.  The front wheel was locked up so we had to lift it onto my trailer.  That bike will reappear as a rigid, solo, Bobber in April of 2010.  God willing.

I like to wait until the owner has reached the point of complete despair or apathy.  Complete despair is when it has been stored for 2 years outside under a torn tarp and he takes the carbs in to get quoted for a rebuild at the local Honda dealer.  He realizes the bike is totaled if he pays their price.  he tries to do it himself and breaks something.  Prices that, once he finds a vendor, and realizes it just took way more time, effort, and money than he cares to invest. Back under the tarp it goes for 2 more years for apathy to run its course.  He finally has a friend list it on Craig's list because he is too lazy to take pictures or get to know eBay.  He needs the money for some other more useful thing like cigarettes.  I step in with a couple of Benjamins and everybody is happy.  "I'll take her off your hands"  title? lost. ran when I parked it 6 months ago.  just needs these f**kin carbs cleaned.  ;D ;D

Gentlemen, there are those that can and will and those that like to watch those that do.

Also good to show up with greenbacks in hand when the guy is gone and just the wife is there.
-And you know she hates the bike.
Did this when I bought my '67 Triumph 650--$900.
And she signed his name to the title.
Had some trouble getting the thing into the back of my Dodge Aries wagon, quickly, by myself,
though.

Even at the current exchange rate those prices ain't bad.  IMO a CB750 with a clean title, mostly complete, and a non-stuck engine is usually worth atleast $500.

KingCustom,
That's my story! Saw it on craigslist, the supposed owner didn't know how to post it. I wasn't smart enough to ask about a title until the deal was done but by then it was too late. I wanted it! No air box and only one pod! "Supposedly" rusted cylinders, but I think the rear brake was overtightened. Bought it for $300 and joined this forum the next day. I have learned a lot, but haven't had the time to put it in practice.
Not many SOHCs around here. Mostly V twins or sport bikes with @$$ loads of plastic on 'em and 4 wheelers out the wazoo.

Well let's see drawing back on my former law enforcement days, let's see what we have here:

Forgery on the wife.
Theft from the rightful owner.
Knowingly presenting a forged document to a Governmental Agency.
Perjury, if the DMV form asked for a declaration.
Conspiracy to defraud.

Not to mention that when Spike came from from meeting with his parole officer and finding his bike missing, there may have been medical bills involved.

Having said all that I am from NY so everything is legal till you get caught.  ;D

I once got a pair of partsbikes, a 78K and a 77A for free from the ex-wife of the owner who parked them a few years before his life fell apart...she got the house and the mess...a buddy from work helped haul them home for me for the seat and side covers from the 78K, nice deal for him...I was a newbie....

i have a friend who got his first honda 550 that way. he was working at a house and asked the neighbor about his bikes. the guy ended up selling one straight up. it never hurts to ask!  if nothing else, you get to talk to another enthusiast. also when we were looking to buy a house last year, the first house we looked at was a total wreck and semi-abandoned, but there was a CB 125 in the garage, partially taken apart. never got ahold of the home owners to find out what the deal was. i couldn't really but any more bikes at that time anyways. you never know where stuff is hiding out!

I got my CB750 by trading my Xbox 360 for it. Eventhough its a project bike...it will be worth it...even if it takes me a year to ride it.

lmao

I just got a 1981 suzuki gs650 in descent shape for $130. He parked it under a tree two years ago and now it's covered in sap and won't start. I saw it in his back yard from the alley and asked. He said "heck yeah, my wife's been bugging me to get rid of  it". He wanted $300. I offered him $50. We met in the middle at $150, but I jewed him down another $20 when he couldn't find the key. I stopped by the car wash, and it's pretty nice under all the dirt and crap. Oh yeah, clean title. I once got a GS1000 for $50 that turned out to be a screamer. It never hurts to ask. Just don't leave a note on the bike. I hate when people leave notes on my bikes wanting to buy it.

A guy spotted me riding my 75K and offered me a running '73 750 for $50. He was moving and was going to junk it in the AM but happened to spot me first.

I have bought scores of cb750s by spotting them parked in driveways, behind sheds, at yard sales, talking to friend's fathers, etc...but I have yet to see a guy riding on the street with a cb750 who wanted to sell. Chances are if they have a halfway decent bike they can register and ride they either don't want to part with it or want some outrageous price for it.  The closest I have gotten is a guy at a bike night with a super clean original cb350 but he ended up wanting $1500 for it and I can't really justify that when I can get a cb750 for that money and get more use out of it.

Once I observed (for several weeks) a CA95 that was parked in a lot next to an apt house.
The bike was complete except for--no carb.---The key was in it.!
I left a note on the door of the apt. building.
Some guy called me and I went over and picked it up for $50.
Not even sure it was his bike !

I don't know if they are that rare here in WI or what?  The only one I see around here is my KO.  I do see an original Sandcast owned by a rep from VJEMC in Green Bay.  But I only see that on display.  We have a number of old Honda dealers around here, but either they are covered in a garage (like mine was) or just gone.  And I do keep my eyes open for another too.

My best sohc find: I am dove hunting here in Texas, shoot a bird that then proceeds to fall into an overgrown junk area that No one would want to walk into.  I really want the bird, enter the snakey junk area behind this little farm house-and find the bird laying two feet from the front wheel of a 20,000 series 1970 CB750K0.  Beer negotiations and fifty bucks later its mine, all there, and ok for laying around outside for a while.  Still, not as good as my buddies "drag a 1964 Mustang GT350 convertible home for free from the inlaws" story, but still pretty good..
