daily driver in DFW
« on: March 18, 2009, 06:43:25 AM »
Seems that SOHC's as common or daily riders is a rare breed in the area.  Ever since getting my 78 cb750, I have been told that I am crazy for using it as a daily driver since they are "So Rare in this area".  So, I would like to know who has an SOHC that they use as a daily or common rider in the area.  Maybe we could meet up for a ride or a beer somewhere.

There are a few of us scattered around here.  There is CBGhia and greenjeans and a guy down off of 175, I forget his site tag.  There is a guy around Bedford/Euless too.

It seems like many in DFW hide for some reason, they popup once in a while.

There are a few others here - http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?board=71.0

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Ya, I think everyone owning classics in this area hides for some reason.  I work in the Motorcycle Accessories industry and hear all the time " I had / Have a CB750 also." or " You should see my (insert classic bike here)."  But when I ask if they want to get together sometime, I get "Oh, it's not road worthy / running right now" or " I don't like to drive it very far"

It's really a shame.  These bikes are almost bullet proof and yet everybody I meet wants to pamper them like they are the Hope Diamond or something.  Isn't the reason we own classics is to ride them and enjoy the feel and spirit of what it was like "Back then"?

I am in this category, lol.  Still trying to finish this bike out for the wife.  I have my own bike and it is a Yamaha.

I would love to ride this bike after the work I have put into it and add a 78k to the stable to make for me.

The Hondas would be for local driving/short afternoon rides to M&Es or on the backroads and the Yammi would be for putting serious hours in the saddle.  I prefer the older bikes.  These newer ones would have me in a grave quick - too much for me to want to learn to handle.  I would rather handle it at lower speeds and still live to enjoy it, lol.

If you start to pamper and pimp yours, you may unlock the secret, lol.

Na, my Betty is a bad girl.  Other than gas and regular maintenance, she likes to be ridden hard and often.

I'm all about it...I don't even have another vehicle to drive. I'm down to something odd...the carbs are all cleaned with kits...i added the dyna coils <have spark> the dyna ignition is still in the box at the moment...the fork seals need to be replaced and probably my tires. Well it used to start and run before I changed all this now it sputters and seems to flood sooo...idk I havn't had a ton of time to work on it. I did put in new plugs the stock ngk's...someone told me this was my problem as they sucked...idk again? I don't have a ton of tools which sets me back a bit...compression, timing light...arrrr!!! I'm a glass blower and just bought a new torch so the bike sits untill funds drop on it...I assume at this point there isn't much cost left in it just time...I hope! When it runs I'll be on it daily...

well i'm learning but I just found this here on the forum under faq for coils etc whatever...

From Two Tired:

You can use 3 ohm coils.  But, you better plan on keeping the engine above 3000 RPM 75% of the time.  Otherwise, get 5 ohm coils for a street bike.  Your alternator only puts out 150 Watts at 5000 RPM and about 40-50 Watts at idle.

3 ohm coils will draw 55 watts with point ignition and about 50% more than that with a Dyna-S ignition (if the reports I've seen of it's operation are correct).  5 ohm coils (such as Stock) draw about 33 W. The stock bike normally needs about 100-110 watts without ignition or lighting mods.

Sooo I need to fit the rest of the dyna ignition I think?

TT is a very in-depth fella.  And, appears to be quite intelligent.  Just read some of his posts, there are quite a few.
