popping
« on: October 05, 2005, 05:26:31 PM »
I just got my '77' cb550k running. I put new floats and carb gaskets in. I cleaned all jets and passages in the carbs. It pops out of #2 cylinder a little at idle, but alot when you are decelerating. Accelerating and cruising is good. I've swapped spark plugs, and checked the valve adjustment, points, timing. Seems to be a carb thing, but I had them apart and I checked them out a couple times. Any deas?
Also what is the stock jetting?  thanks

...I'd say its an exhaust leak...specially since u said it pops on deceleration.  Check out the number two pipe good...good for any leaks/holes, especially around where the pipe meets the head...

If you check that out and it appears not to be the cause, I would then do some plug reading, particularly some low speed, around town riding. The idle mixture could be on the rich side. I had this problem and leaned out the idle mixture some and the popping was virtually eliminated.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

My number 1 cylinder backfires a bit on deceleration and sometimes at idle, but is fine during aceleration and cruising just like yours.  It makes what could be called a 'popping' sound (not loud).  Maybe that's what you are experiencing.  I've riched up my idle a bit more than normal and I'm guessing the 'popping' is caused by that.

a good dwell/tach meter can really help with this. Allows you to tune as accurately as possible. Bad thing is that even usedit can cost $20 or more but I suppose that is nothing in the face of good performance.
