CB550 Cam chain sprocket
« on: October 14, 2005, 08:36:09 PM »
Just got the heads back from being rebored on my 75 CB 550.. Pistons and cylinders installed. Head installed.
Cam and sprocked installed.   This is the part thats killing me........

The cam is in place. The cam chain spocket is in place with the cam chain over it. Now it time to get the cam sprocket in place on the cam shaft and attached with the two bolts. There simply doesn't appear to be enough play in the cam chain to come .050 higher to seat onto the cam... I've been fiddling with this one task for the last six hours. No success.

Yes the tensioner is set to relieve tension on the cam chain. There must be some little secret I'm missing. My manual offer nothing.
It says attach the sprocket to the cam shaft using the two bolts. Yes I know this. Just not enough play in the cam chain to do it.

Anyone got any advise here?

Hi, mines a cb400f but it's the same motor basically. When I fitted a new cam chain I found the same problem but if the tensioner is slackened right off, it is possible to mount the sprocket. I suspect that despite your efforts, the tensioner is still applying a little pressure. I suggest that you loosen the two bolts that hold the top of the tensioner blade to gain a bit more slack. In extreme case you could even remove the tensioner blade while assembling the sprocket and replace it when you have the chain in place. regards, John.
