My sister and I adopted a three year old boxer named "Princess Gigi". She was found tied to the side of a barn eating rocks and siding off the barn. The barn of course was a puppy mill. So they rescued her and Stacy, the lady we got her from fostered her. When we first saw her we knew she was supposed to be with us. We took her home. First we dropped Princess Gigi for Elvis. Her lower jaw bone is crooked, apparently this is common in boxers, so any way her tounge hangs out slightly and her lip curls up, hence Elvis.

When she first got home, she wouldn't eat or drink or play or really do anything but cower away from us. So we gave her her space and eventually she came around. She was about twenty pounds under weight when we got her. I am happy to report that she is now at her target weight, she eats, drinks, plays (a lot), and has completely changed our life. She doesn't need a leed when we walk her or even just let her outside, she doesn't even WANT to be away from us. She is great with my neice. Elvis is a super dog. She is a love bug and I am okay with that, I am happy to have her around and love her a lot.

This brings me to my point. I get ill when I hear stories like this. About people who do these things to these poor animals. I am ashamed to breathe the same air as them. Why would you treat a dog, a cat, a horse, or ANY other living creature in this way? They can't fend for themselves, might as well tie a baby to the side of the barn for god sakes...

Firecracker, I sure hated to hear about Dolly, I can well imagine the feelings when a pet passes on. Kevin, the one in the phot of the Honda 400F that I posted, just started to want to go outside and was acting kinda funny, and we had absolutely NO idea what was about to happen. I finally took him outside because he was having some trouble and suddenly it hit me that he could die on me right there (out in my garage) and I kneeled down and laid him down almost on the floor of my garage, Then he laid in my hands, barked and died that quickly! :'( I was so upset that I cried and I was also glad that my wife and my Daughter didn't have to see him go. When I went back in the house to tell them what had happened and that I had to go and bury him, my Wife could not believe me and was going to go out in the garage to get him. I finally convinced her that he was gone. And so, our poor Kevin (who had given us so much fun, love and laughter) was gone.    sorry, have to go

Amen Caaveman!

Sometimes I cringe from the word 'humane' as so much cruelty is committed by we "higher" human beings. It is reassuring beyond words to read stories of compassion, and even loss. Sometimes when I'm trying to do some good for some otherwise unloved animal it feels like I'm p!ssing in the wind... then I log onto the most kick a$$ bike forum and read about this stuff. Who'd a thunk? Maybe we won't all be turned to brimstone after all.

Reading all the stories on here made me think back to when i was still living in my old place and had my three dogs. Heidi, Misty and Duke. All three of them are gone now unfortunately. I got Heidi when i was about 7 years old and had her for about 11 years before she passed. Duke and Misty showed up when i was 15 going on 16. Misty was my fathers dog and Duke was just a surprise i guess one could put it. My mom had learned of someone giving away a pure breed Chow and she decided i was allowed to have a second Dog along with Heidi. When we picked up Duke he wouldn't go anywhere near anyone but me for some reason. mind you i didn't help matters by approaching with a treat to help earn his trust. After awhile he became part of the family and was a great playmate for both Misty and Heidi. He was fiercely protective of Misty as if he was her father. Just as Heidi was protective of her as well...anyone attempted to approach the pup other then myself or my parents they had to deal with the two grown up dogs. Heidi was a German Shepard/Samoyd cross, Misty was a Collie/Chow cross and Duke as said was a pure breed Chow. Heidi was 5 weeks old when i got her. Misty was 5 weeks old as well when dad picked her up to have a pet of his own. and Duke was 3 1/2 years old when he was brought into the fold. Duke and Misty were poisoned by an old guy who didnt like dogs...he killed something like 8 dogs before someone figured him out. What happened with heidi is i think she simply went because of a broken heart because of loosing her playmates. I know she moped around for a long time before she passed away.

If that other person didn't take him in... Go get him!  If you can't keep him, I'll help you find a home for him with some of my rescue group contacts.

Glad to hear!!!

Both my kitties, Ito'san and Harlequin were adopted from the shelter.  Ito was sick at the time (regular upper respiratory thing and sneezed blood) and (though I didn't know it at the time) while this was technically a no-kill shelter, if the pets got ill, often they were put down.  Ito was my first baby, and is now a healthy 14 pound kitty loaf.

Harlequin had been recently 'fixed' but for some odd reason, though her stitches had healed over, her fur hadn't grown back at all.  She was still totally bald on her belly, nervous (tended to pee in piles of clothes) didn't like being touched or held.  I was told she wouldn't play, didn't know how. ??? because she'd  been a stray.
Both kitties went to my holistic vet who told me Harlequin had a grain allergy.  After a change in diet, her fur grew back in and after about a year and a half of TLC, she's just as cuddly as Ito. Not quite the sack of potatoes to pick up that Ito is, but very mellow now. :)
It's been a very rewarding transformation to see.
