removing slider cylinders on 74 750
« on: October 09, 2005, 07:17:58 AM »
while removing slider cylinders from the carbs i met with a great deal of resistance.  Even when twisting them i could not clear the the clip iside the cylinder.  After a little force they fnally came out but i am sure the clip was bent upwards to allow for their release.  Does anyone know if this may present an issue down the road?

by the way, the carb disassembly ans cleaning tutorial in the faq's is awesome.  many thanks.

As a guess at what you're describing, Is the part you twisted out possibly the threaded rod and small spring that raises the throttle valve (slide cylinder)?
The clip you speak of sounds like the needle set plate. This assy is attached by two phillips screws to the bottom inside of the throttle valve and covers the jet needle.  If the upper " clip" portion of it got bent upward when you removed the rod, you'll have to bend it back level, so that the small spring sandwiched inside it is slightly preloaded. If you don't return it level, you'll have freeplay in the adjuster rod, which will cause a big headache come carb sync time.

Yes, this is what i was trying to describe.  I will be sure to bend back to level as I wasn't really sure of their original positon.

Must be a better way to pull those rods out but I couldn't find it.  Thanks for help as this carb rebuild process is a bit more than i expected.  In fact the entire project seems to be expanding before my eyes...   At least there is no deadline to meet as winter is approaching here in Pennsylvania...  On the road by spring sounds like a more reasonable timetable.

Removing the 2 screws isn't all that bad, just the key things to remember are to find a long enough screwdriver and find one that fits the screw well. If the screw is stuck, and gets shaved out by an ill-fitting screwdriver, you'll have bigger problems later!
