Dream Bike
« on: April 15, 2005, 11:08:36 PM »
where are we headed with our addiction to really cool toys?
*my first was a '72ish suzuki TC125- it was sitting in my grandpa's barn for 10-15 years, my father and i did a minimal 10-15 year tune and away i went on my motorcycle infatuation
*time passed my first street legal motorcycle was an 89 vtr250- man, let me tell you, if there is a great beginner bike this is it.  maneuverable and not too fast but still makes a great v-twin growl (see crashes for the fate of this motorcycle)
*now... i wanted more! A 1994 hondaCBR600f2 would do.- new paint, and too many crazy stories to tell with this bike (at least for one post) i saw 167mph on this motorcycle (not sure how accurate that was... i say + or - 10mph)... anyway, i miss that one!
*we called it the pickle- a 70's rd400 "oh the wheelies!"
* an '89 kawasaki ex500 was next on the list- this and the TC125 went with me to MMI in 1998 (I was 21 years old)
*this is where I TURN BITTER
*my TC125 was stolen upon moving to Phoenix to attend MMI... I had to sell the EX500 to assure my completion of MMI.
*since "Motorcycle Mechanics Inst."- 3 years of putting up with corporate B.S.- i decided to hang up my wrenches and call it a hobby.
*after MMI i've roamed the arizona desert on a '93 ktm125exc and a 2001 yz250 (gotta love that motorcross track right north of glendale, AZ... anybody remember the name of it?)
*and most recently, a 73 cb350f and 77 cb400fss project purchased together 2 years ago... no need to tell you how obsessed i am with these two!  :P
*this brings me to my original topic- what is your ultimate dream bike?  a more obtainable goal for myself that has always been a source of drool... the Yamaha VMAX!  oooooohhhhhh man! that bike rocks!
BUT... my "Dream Bike" would have to be, the

Well, Since I was apparently born without one shred of common sense and a complete lack of a self preservation instinct I have found that playing with vintage motorcycles is an exellent way to moderate an overwelming desire to go insanely fast and do stupid stuff. Since I have 2 750's, a 350, a gl1000 goldwing, a R90/6, and one lonely Kawasaki I'm going to go with.........

Got to be the 1970's Laverda Jota.

I really, really wanted one of those when all I could afford (student) was an old 500F.

As dumb luck would have it I'm restoring it right now.

Last April while on my way to college I spotted an old bike in a small car lot.  Pulled in to check it out as I always do.  Usually pull away when I see a run of the mill worn out yamaha or something.  This time I noticed the luvered side covers.  Hmmmm. it's a K0 I thought to myself.  Went over an looked at the frame + engine #'s....  HOLY CRAP!  A Sandcast!  The place wasn't open yet so I called the # on the door.  Um hello I was wondering what you might take for that old red honda.  Please call me @.................  I came back after class having not gotten a call but the owner of the lot was in.  I asked him what he wanted for it.  He said well I hanvn't had time to look at it yet.  A guy who lives accross the street traded it and a car for another car.  I suppose I'll take $200.00 for it.  As my heart started thumping I said well if you have the title it's a deal.  I couldn't be cool enough to haggle @ the time.   I just wanted that bike and I didn't want to talk too much as I was very much not calm on the inside.  He said he did have a title so I went straight to the ATM.  Paid for it got the title + sales agreement and had to go home since I don't have a truck.  I didn't get much sleep that night and I was very nurvous till I was abble to borrow my neighbors truck to go pick it up.

Since my first bike was a Japanese bike I developed a like for these things.  About five years ago I heard that some of them are collectable.  I started reaseaching this by getting a few collectors guides.  I knew I would find something worth collecting for a song sooner or later.  I never thought my first find would be this bike though.  I feel like I won a raffle.

Speaking of raffles.  My local bank raffles off a Harley now and then.  I always buy a ticket.  The thought that runs through my mind about winning is telling them that I'm going to sell this thing so I can finish my Honda resto.

Dream bike? 500F. Always was, still is. A CBX1000 would be nice as a runabout, though  ;)

I've been trying to decide on a new dream bike ever since I got my 750.  But in the meantime, this one will do.

Well, I really love my 1975 CB750 and my 1979 RD400 and will never sell them.  But, if I could fill out my dream list, it would include, in addition to these, a 1932 Brough Superior, a Vincent Black Shadow, a Norton Commando, and a BMW R100RS.  There's more, I'm sure, but this list would keep me very, very happy for a very long time.  :)

Wouldn't mind one of the old Indians. The one with the inline 4 Motor.

Just read some articles on the Indian 4 and the Vincent.  The Indian 4 started in 1929.  Thats pretty impressive to be building a bike with that kind of motor back then.  By 1939 they started tacking the year on the model....  1939=439.  up to 1942=442.  All the years are EXPENSIVE.  the later years seem to be worth more than early.  increasing gradually.

The vincents are EXPENSIVE times Three.  from reading this article I would rather find an unrestored project vincent than one that has been restored.  Apparently since the #'s are in seprate locations on these things restorations sometimes consist of tampering with #'s and series lettering.  If you invest in one of these have it checked thuroughly for tampering and camoflaging of improper parts.  Thurough factory records of vintage vincents are held by the Vincent owners club and the bike can be verified before you lay down the cash.

Trust me, I'm trying to figure out how not to run down and clear out my bank account to buy the one for $2000.

Steve,

Just to make you feel real bad, there is a house a couple of blocks from me here in Ann Arbor that uses a 70's Laverda as a window decoration in their livingroom, I kid you not, it's never moved, just sits there in a big bay window.. almost criminal!
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I've never riden a Jota but understand that you need "Gorilla Grip" for the clutch!

A specialist UK classic bike company (www.classicbikes.co.uk) recently sold a concourse show winner for £8000!

Not a chance mate, given the current exchange rate !!

They sell serious classics for serious money. They obviously specialise in Kawa Zeds, £5000 seems to be going rate for a pristine example.

Now THIS is what its all about! Still, while I lust for sex six, I prefer the 70s fours, they being not quite so, uh, daunting...

Finding a CBX?

1. You can get really lucky and find one that the owner doesn't know what they have. (Not likely...... It has 6 cylinders!)
2. You can wait for one to come up in the Vintage Cycle Trader.
3. You can find one on e-bay.

options two and three will set you back about 10 grand.

smitrelo (and all readers... of course)~
we had a few of the cbx1000's in our clinics at mmi... you have to realize that most of those bikes were not road worthy due to soon to be/ wannabe mechanics having their grubby paws all over 'em.  BUT, never having ridden one personnally but toyed with a few... they are eye candy with a hint of whoopass.  what i mean is 6 cylinders and a whole lotta late 70's and early 80's style and muscle.  (you have to realize that's what i am... eye candy with a hint of whoopass  with a whole lotta 70's and 80's style and muscle ;) )  much like the "boss hoss" (only scaled to humans)... hence "heffay" (Jefe for those of you that don't know how to spell my name- i can only say this bcuz my real name is geoff (jeff))... wait... was i talkin about myself or the cbx1000?
anyway, smitrelo- they are everywhere!!!  before your last post, on my way home (before reading your last post) I noticed one pulling into an alley.  As my "Pops" would say... watch the paper!
