K1 Chain Fitment
« on: February 07, 2009, 10:48:01 AM »
I ordered a new chain for my CB750K1. All I read said I needed a 530 100 link chain.

I got a KMC 530OU 100L o-ring chain.

My bike has 18 tooth sprocket front and 48 in rear. Both as I understand are stock sizes.

With the chain on the front sprocket, the rear wheel pushed as far forward as possible with adjustors out
full, and the bottom of chain pulled snug, I can only get the chain to about 3/4" from connecting.

Seems the chain is about a link short. Am I doing this wrong or what else could I be missing???

Uh... nevermind folks.

I ASS-U-ME'd too much. The sprockets are stock size, 18/48. I assumed the swingarm was stock but altered.
It has two shock mounts on each side. I thought a previous owner simply welded the extra location
to lower the bike. But now I think maybe it is off another model or year.

Anyway, I did what I should have done first and counted the old chain and it is a 104 link chain.
So obviously, the swingarm isn't the stock one or has been altered more than I realize.

So, for now I am going to use the old chain.

But, I do wonder.... Are all O-ring chains that much thicker (height) than the non o-ring chains? Both these chains
are marked as 530's, but the O-ring chain seems to sit a LOT closer to the engine case than my old
non-oring chain. Is that normal for an o-ring chain??

An o-ring chain will be wider (because of the o-rings between the plates) but should be the same height.
