I lost my key.
« on: February 05, 2009, 05:42:49 AM »
So in the process of preparing to move the bike, I've realized that I don't know where my key is.   ???  The bike doesn't run yet, as I'll say I'm in the process of re-building it... but what would I have to do to get a replacement key made? Or heck... even just set the bike up so I don't even need a key?

Check www.hondakeys.com with your number (found stamped in the ignition lock). I would be surprised if you couldn't get a new set.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

A good local locksmith will be able to cut you a key by referencing the bike's year and model, and the key code on your ignition lock...maybe even your seat lock.
Check with your local guys first, it'll be faster and probably cheaper too.

If you are lucky there will be a number on the outside of the lock, problem with your year is you have to take off loads of stuff just to remove the lock!!

I plan on taking the bike completely apart anyway, so it shouldn't be too much of an issue.   ;)

you could just replace it

http://crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm
Click on Electrical, then Ignitions.

They are $25 and I've ordered a couple of things from these guys and they are quick and reliable. I have some on my 550 and it's great.

I was actually kind of hoping about this, and will probably go this route.

Although I'm not sure how I'm going to get the seat off with no key.   :-[

I had the same issue with my 72 750 and I went with the ignition switch replacement. As for the seat lock, I wasn't going to use it anyway, so i drilled out the lock cylinder(doing no damage to the housing) used a screwdriver inserted into the hole to turn the lock mechanism, and removed the housing. My ignition switch was only like 12 bucks on ebay, and it came with two keys and works well.

Took me a minute to find it.

Works great.
A K7 comes apart a little differently though.

Ok, so update... I know... I've been so busy trying to get the SV running again, I neglected the poor CB.  :(

Anyhoo, started tearing stuff apart today, to transfer the bike inside.

Anyway, I took off the top triple, and found this number:

It's on the locking mechanism.  Problem is, it doesn't look like any of the examples on the hondakeys.com site, and doesn't appear to match any sequence.  I'm stumped.  Is this the wrong number?  Do I need to tear something else apart?

Also, how hard is drilling out the lock for the seat?  Pretty easy?

a word on the seat...

i'm going to put this out there, that if you lose a key... you can often get to the pins on the opposite side of the seat and/or the nuts that fasten the seat to the frame.

obviously not on all sohc4s... but i know at least a couple, maybe 3.

Avoid drilling out the lock for the seat.  With an open end (10mm) or possibly a wobbly socket, you can get at the latch on the seat and remove the two nuts that hold it down.

Here's a pic of my K8 with the seat about 1/2 inch from latched.

Heffay is right I had to wait for my keys but I took off the seat and the the lock cylinder so i could work on the bike. These were not high security.

I'm not worried about security either.  Seat will be replaced with something else anyway.  Thinking of going race tail.  Can the lock be done away with alltogether?

there is an emergency hole on the bottom of the seat lock anyhow. so you can open it and take it off. you will still need it I think to keep your seat down but what I did was just take the tumblers out of the lock.

I know because I lost my keys the other day too.  :-\

If you take apart the lock, you can remove all the springs and tumblers making it open-able with any key, screwdriver, etc.

My nephew lost the key to my resto bike. I was also able to get the seat latch off without a key. A lot of bike dealer's know of locksmiths that can make you up a new key with the code on the lock and they year/make of the bike. Just remember that it's the same key for the front fork lock if you still want to use that. The honda key site is expensive but a good last resort place to go if all else fails. I am using him to make me a set for my 64 C100 bike that I only have one key for.

There's also instructions in the FAQ about how to make your own key.  Once you have everything ready to go, it should take less than an hour.

that's some key! i liked hondakeys.com because i wanted honda keys and wanted perfect fitting keys. mine weren't expensive (well, maybe compared to a hardware store cut they were), had the nice 'honda' script, and fit sweetly. my frugal friends thought me nutty.

Gee, I went to the main FAQ page and didn't find that thread. Maybe it got pulled.
Encosse, Wait... here is the other side. It is a very unusual key from what I hear.
