Topic: 1977 CB750 Super sport rebuild...my first bike project

Well....I've never had a motorcycle before and I decided that I needed a new project so I picked a 77 CB750F off craigslist for $450.  The bike has 9k original miles on it but the last time the bike was ridden was in 1983.  So I figured I'd take it apart...rebuild all the normal stuff(brakes..carbs..etc) and and maybe give it a little cafe style.

The day after I picked it up I stripped it down




The I started cutting off mounting tabs I wouldn't need(airbox...center stand)



When I bought the bike the front caliper was frozen...I thought....after taken it apart it turns out the inner pad was corroded and completely stuck in the caliper.  I had to break off all of the brake pad material and clean so I could weld some square stock to the pad backing plate to pull the pad out of the caliper.


The funny thing is...I thought the 750F was suposed to have dual front discs...Mine only has a single disc..and from the manual it appears to be a k style caliper....
Can someone identify this front wheel?


When I bought bike it was missing the side cover...so I figured I'd make my own cover




I have a bunch stuff to do on this project...It'll be slow going until the economy picks ups but I'm in no rush.

The 77 & 78 F's should have dual front disc.
That front wheel is definitely not correct. I cant say what its from though.
The Caliper mounting looks Kinda like my old 550 mounting.
I cant remember but i thought my 78F's calipers mounted behind the tubes.
I'll have to double check.

i have a 78 that i started 6 months ago. Build link is at the bottom of my post. The 77-78f bikes are a little different from the rest of the bikes. And by different i mean better. (in some ways) anyway i dont know how much you know about the bike but while you have the engine out you might want to check the valves. The F bikes had problems with them. That front tire is not the stock one obviously. They may have changed the fork lowers to put on that wheel. Check this thread to identify the wheel..

Welcome Super Sport fan.

I can't ID that wheel (Henry Abe maybe? There were others too ) but I'd venture to say that the single brake is due to the earlier style wheel. Perhaps we had a mishap and the front had to be changed assuming the rear was not? Woulda been easier to use a grease gun to pressure the piston out if possible. That is the preferred method. That caliper is definitely an earlier K vs a 75/76 F or later F or K. The bleeder position is the telling factor. Am I seeing some scratches on the downtubes caused by the exhaust studs from a previous engine removal? If you take the head off be sure to measure the piston diameter for a bore kit.
