Where do I get chrome work done?
« on: February 06, 2009, 08:37:42 AM »
I would like to get my fuel cap latch re-chromed. I found a reputable chromer but the minimum was $75.00. Any one have a recommendation?

Find some more parts that need chrome to make the $75 minimum work out.

Got some aluminum you are tired of polishing?  That might be an idea to help fill the minimum.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Are you talking about Brown's Plating in KY? If so maybe I can help.

Although I like the idea that you should chrome more stuff.   ;D

There are powders out there that look like chrome now..

http://www.powderbuythepound.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=46_112&products_id=36&osCsid=s4vfbe3t71s01l37cid85sk3v7

might be cheaper in the long run if you buy your own powder and have some one coat the part for you

I'm a tough nut to crack.... OK I'll tell.

I'm sending my swingarm and rear axle/washer/nut to Brown's Plating  http://www.brownsplating.com/chrome_direct.php  . They seem to be the best really MC friendly. Pricey but I think they are quick, do all the environmental stuff plus if you watch their videos http://brownsplating.com/about.php  they are very thoruough. I've had stuff done locally, but it always takes forever, half time it's got to be redone, and I'm pretty sure they are not EPA legal.

So I told jbooher he could throw his part in my box. Anyone else? Want to do it in next week or so.

Just a heads-up....if you're gonna have the axle plated, be sure you tell them not to plate the center section that has to slide through the bearings, or it may not fit when you get it back.
If you don't mind me asking, how much to get the swingarm chromed?

Hey Ron, just noticed you had an FJR.  Wished I lived out your way.  Those bikes are hot!  Best of both of those worlds - Sport and Touring.  Guess that is why they call it a sport tourer, lol.

I'll vouch for my ex neighbor Browns Plating. I took my valve cover in to their shop back in 77?. The boys that run their old man's shop were just kids then and all us Paducah boys were just plain crazy (still am). Back in the days there was no EPA to be compliant with. Guess thats why the ex Union Carbide Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Uranium Enrichment Plant that I worked at used to bury the spent uranium ore on the grounds. Amazing how the EPA has decided everyone's well is hot nowadays. What tha hell is a little chromium in the water when you can have uranium?! Brown's has been forced to play by the rules. One of the best motorcycle platers out there. PLUS my '77 chromed valve cover STILL looks good. They do it the right way. Worth a few extra bucks.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

It's the truth man. Chrome is a mofo and very unhealthy for people and the environment, so if you are going to get stuff plated you might as well shill out the few extra bucks for the quality. There is almost always a right way and a wrong way, why support people that cut corners?

Good to get some 3rd party reinforcement. I am taking a flyer with them, but very impressed with their website. Someone on this board came up with the name months ago and I bookmarked it for when I was ready.

THanks, I got the 2nd one in Indiana, 14th one in the country when they first were introduced here. Haven't ridden it near enough, But I've been to Denver where I clocked my personal best 750 miles in 13 hours, all on 2 lane roads. Kansas was a blast, believe it or not. Been to Massachusetts, as far from here as Denver, and to Deal's Gap TN. MAny other smaller trips.

Thanks for the tip, I was aware. Supposedly, Brown's should be too. They claim to be up to speed on masking and plugging without our concern. But it never hurts to say it. Motorcycles are all they do.

They publish a catalogue with prices http://www.brownsplating.com/chrome_direct.php  Its page 14 for the CB750. They have virtually everypart that can be removed from the frame (no frames) priced out. Its $239 for the swingarm. Gulp. I had thought about powdercoating the same as the frame, for 1/4 the cost. But I know from running it chromed for the past 20 years that it is a real eyecatcher. The whole rear is chrome or polished, wheel, fender, brake rods and stay, shocks and springs, passenger pegs. My project's goal includes high eye appeal, so I'm going to pop for it.

The chrome on it now has degraded from battery acid and misc pitting and boo-boos.
