Ok, I will sneak back in as the guy who started this post, a post with no answers.  I have given this great thought after considering the comments. The K8 "feeling" faster could have had to do with:

a. Strange bike and fear of death from strange bike (found 8 psi in front tire, explained front end issues after test).
b. Strange road and fear of strange unseen dips and pot holes.
c. Strange redneck neighborhood and fear of winding up like Peter Fonda in "Easy Rider".
d. And especially (and I am not kidding) I forgot my glasses and was riding in a state of Blurr...

The scariest roller coaster I was ever on was the "lightning" at the state fair of Texas, not because it was all that fast, but because it's wooden frame was so rickety and poorly maintained that collapse seemed always close at hand. All of this could have impacted that earlier comment of  k8 seemed faster than my k1.

Still, it did seem faster....thanks for the replies.

The 78 has accelerator pump on the carbs.

that could well give you better response and a totally different feel.
