What is this thing on a CB400F?
« on: February 08, 2009, 07:08:35 AM »
I've been going through some photos of a CB400F I might get...just had a question on something.

What is that thing that the arrow's pointing to?  ??? Looks like a rubber hose, but open? I'm sure it's normal, just haven't seen a close-up shot of other CB400F's to compare stuff to.

Follow it up to the other end and you'll have your answer. ;)

Looks like maybe your air box drain tube that's gotten routed off to the side instead of straight down, but from looking at a picture, all we can do is guess.

Undoubtedly a drain hose, but for what is the question. Only a couple options up there.

I agree, that it's most likely a carb drain tube. It looks like it is laying on the exhust, the first thing I would do is move it.

Yup, carb drain hose. The battery overflow is typically clear tubing and the drain from the air filter assembly is to short to make it to the brake pedal.

So is a normal length carb drain tube.  On a 35+ year old bike, chances are all of the various overflow/drain tubes (if present at all) have been changed at some point, and may not be the normal length.

Like I said before, from looking at a picture, all we can do is guess.

Yeah those hoses are meant to route the gas that leaves the carbs onto the ground.

Normal routing for the drain hoses is to end just in front of the swingarm.  Looks to me like that hose is just too long, and loops from the normal spot to where you see it in the pic.

That's the small tube that shoots petrol over your right foot for those very cold mornings, I believe it is a Canadian invention! ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hi Jimj,
That is either the carb overflow hose that is coming from one of the carbs, or it is the
one of two carb breathers.

Not to worry too much, but you should have at least 6 small hoses dropping behind your swing arm.

And if you need pics, just drop me a PM, and I'll get those pics for you.

And also...Howdy 400F owner ;D ;D ;D :) :) ;)

Bah! Don't listen to those idiots. They love to confuse new members with all kinds of crazy talk.

It's the emergency rear tire manual inflation tube. If you get a flat whilst out riding simply prop the bike up on the center stand, get down on your hands and knees and blow into the tube. Simple and effective.
