Topic: quick battery confirmation...

Just to verify that the numerous bits of info I have derived from both the FAQ and dozens of post here are correct...

The battery needed for a 750 (my bike is a '76 750k) is 12v 12Ah (stock)

Sorry for the need to ask, but there are so many posts out there regarding batt. changes, it's hard to know which ones are for sure correct, and I couldn't find an Amp rating in the FAQ...

damn...I already crossed that off my list    Awesome.  Thanks bwaller.  I'm looking at a few different AGM's right now that are between $50-$70 and have dimensions that find acceptable for my desired fitment.  Would've sucked to get the wrong one.  I would've just checked mine, but it is in a box, wondering if it will ever see me again.  12v14Ah - the search continues...

Do yourself a favor and don't get some odd-ball sized battery if you can help it.

The 12N14A is available anywhere, even Walmart. So if you're on the road and in a pinch need a battery, or that warm spring day comes and your battery is a useless pile of lead, you can easily and quickly get one.

Just my two cents.

If you DO need something different, get a common size if you can. Don't fret too much on the mAh rating, ball park is close enough. If your electrical system is in tip-top shape, don't need to run the starter for 30 seconds to start the bike and you do yourself a favor and convert over to LED lighting, you can very easily get away with a smaller-than-stock battery. But again, try to stay away from odd-balls.

Yeah the 12 ah battery will be absolutely fine. Mine has done excellence for 2 years now. 12 ah or 14 ah and you will do just fine. The agm puts out more power than a standard lead acid or sealed lead acid does.  On the order of almost double the cranking amps.
A lead acid 14 ah does about 100 - 110 or so. The agm does about 200. Plus the agm will not need an overflow tube and can be mounted anyway you want.

yeah, I hear yah on sticking to a readily available batt just in case...but........ (I don't know how to type that to make it more drawn out ), standard/typical size for a readily available batt. is becoming more and more of a placement issue with my second project.  My monoshock conversion places the upper shock mount right in the way of where the battery would normally sit.  I could use a standard size under the rear cowl, but I was wanting to keep that area free for potential passenger cushion mounting.  I'll be fabbing up my own oil reservoir to accomodate the space I have available, but I can just fab a battery

I do wonder though, with pods, if a AGM on its' side could sit above the transmission (heat issue would then be a concern, but Perhaps that could be worked with.

Also, with some of the funky sizes of AGM/gels I've found, they tend to have different connectors.  So that brings up another question:  how big should the connection point be?  I'm sure there's a recommended battery cable size, but I dunno about connectors (the AGMs I was looking at this morning had spade style tabs rather than a screw down clamp like my current battery.)

I would personally go with an 8ga cable if you still have a starter.  Otherwise you can get away with 12ga - 14ga no problem. Dropping the starter really opens up options for going smaller on the battery too.

Well the starter means nothing of wire size. Why? Just do not use it! Same things as if you got rid of it. After all, if the button is not pushed, nothing is going to the battery. Just saying. I think a bigger reason to get rid of the starter is weight savings.

Well, if you have a starter it sure makes sense to wire it appropriately. Sure you don't have to use it, but if you're running 16ga battery leads and you need to use it or want to use it, it's not going to be a good situation. Might as well just remove it at that point. So for most reasonable people I'd say it's a good rule of thumb. Just saying.

I was just saying it was not required. A good idea, sure, just not required. Nothing more. You could hook 22 gauge wire to a 1000 watt amp, unless it turns on, it would never know. But of course IF you are going to use the starter, then sure you want to wire it accordingly.

Well, so long as we are getting ridiculously literal. 

You could hook that 1000watt amp up a 22 gauge wire and turn it on without a problem!

But it would surely melt if you were to put any sort of load on it.

what is proper attire for a quick battery confirmation?
i know normally a suit and tie would work but... i mean... i don't really wanna get all gussied up for nuthin. 
what denomination is your battery?  that might help me decide.
