SHES RUNNING
« on: February 08, 2009, 04:52:53 PM »
Well guys after much frustration she is running near perfect.

I took the carbs off again. Adjusted them 3/4 turn out, used a paper clip as a slow jet declogger (works) and compressed air through all the jets and openings.

Put the carbs back on and didnt tightened anything until the airbox was on and secured on the bike since the airbox acts as a support.

She started right up, had to use the choke for about 30 sec...idles perfect off choke, I let it idle for about 2 minutes...took it for a ride in the alley again..ran perfect...didnt die....did that about 7 times..than I took it around the block twice..it never died...never hesitated...runs smooth and strong. No idle hang ups..nothing...near perfect

My wife thought I was a little kid when I was jumping up and down.

Thanks for all the help on this site, and sorry if I asked too much questions..but those answers you guys gave me along with the shop manual helped me to look for things I might have overlooked at first. Thanks

Good for you man.  That is great news.  I know what it's like to jump up and down like a lunatic.    ;D

When you see a bunch of folks having problems getting their bike running or running correctly on this forum, it's easy to assume these things (SOHC4s) are finicky.  They're actually not.  In my estimation, most issues are due to a previous owner's "mods" or our own "oversights".  I am not excluded from the troublemakers.  The facts are that these bikes run real nice when set up "close to" correctly.  I guess that's one of the reasons we're all here.

I'll be watching how you're doing with your bike.  I have a "previously modified" K8 I'll be working on soon.

Thanks man. Its been a great learning experience and I like working on things..it passes time well and makes you feel worthy. While the build I found that I have an old school jardine pipes  ;D

The previous owner before me did not take care of the bike very well, as far as tune ups, but the bike held great with still good compression.

I do have one question...Timing. I got it set, but I dunno if this is normal or not...I know the bike goes full advanced at 2500+ rpms, but at about 3000+ its not lining up with the advance mark but rather after it..almost to the heel of the advancer weight.

Its a greta feeling when one of these old bikes comes back to life and even better when you get them running spot on, well done Hun.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Points gap might be set incorrect.
Before you start timing, be sure points gap is set correct, by using a feeler or better a dwellmeter. Only a dwell set exactly in the middle of 460 and 490 will result in a spot on ignition on "F" static and right between the double lines on full advance. If on my 500 I'll set the dwell let's say to 460 or 490 the advancerange will differ already. I've forgotten which way. I think it was, if I had maximum dwell 490 the advancerange from 1000 to 3000 rpm turned out less than with the books minimum dwell of 460. Others in this forum might correct me and I'll come back to this when I'm sure. In your case I understand that at 3000 rpm the advance marks are not even visible. This leads me to suspect that dwell is set far from the 460and 490 Honda finds acceptable (these values concern a 500 or 550, but the principle goes for all models).
If, after setting your dwell correctly (and a renewed necessary timing), advance is still way off, you may have a look at the advancer mechanism.

BTW, I would not recommend a paperclip to clean out jets. I'd prefer electric (copper) wire, which is softer than the soft material jets are made from.

Excellent work Mr. TheHun!  I can't wait to jump up and down like that myself, thanks for the tip about leaving everything loose until the airbox is in, I've never heard that one before.

how do you set the dwell?
Points gap should be set beteen 0,3 and 0,4 mm (0.012-0.016). You can use a feeler gauge.
Or you can use a dwellmeter that registrates the degrees the crank rotates while the breaker points remain closed. So, the higher the dwellmeter reading, the smaller the point gap. The shorter the dwell, the wider the point gap. I prefer the meter. Some DMMs have this function. It's easier, more precise and you're able to check for irregularities at different rpms. On 500/550s breaker point dwell should be in between 980-920 or 490-460. This depends on what scale your meter reads. If you're lucky enough to have a dwellmeter that reads american style, it's even easier as they registrate in %. 980-920 or 490-460 translates in 54,4-51,1%.
Setting the dwell should precede the timing. Once you have set the timing correctly, you can - later on - correct the timing, if necessary, by simply bringing the contact breakers to their correct dwell again and you don't have to bother to loosen the plates anymore. Less screws to work on. :)

For those of you that prefer, like me, the dynamic procedure and use a dwellmeter, here is a tip.
Years ago I have attached two ‘blind’ extra wires on my coils (12V-) both with a female connector at their end. Once you have set your timing correctly, these wires allow quick diagnoses later on. Write down the dwell for future reference. Almost all changes in timing originate at the contactbreakers. When the dwell changes, so does the timing. When you suspect the timing is off, simply connect the dwellmeter to the extra lead 1&4 or 2&3 and you can verify if dwellangle is still the same or has changed. It’s important that those female connectors are well shielded to avoid groundcontact.
I have had these wires attached for years now. What I like is that I can check really quick without even to remove the ignitioncover.

Yeah, it helped me a ton leaving everything loose until the airbox gave me the correct angle needed for the carbs before tightening it. I hooked up the throttle lines though for some support when you wiggle in your airbox.

also another tip, I know putting the airbox in/out is a pain, but if you take the bottom half of the air box off, its a piece of cake.

BTW i looked pretty ghetto when I was riding down the alley with no tank, sidecovers, headlights. My tank is ghetto ready for paint soon :)

I did the same thing, used a gatoraid bottle for a tank, no seat, no side covers, no front brake,  no gauges. i just had to rip up the street and back. i was grinning from ear to ear.

Good to hear ys got her running Hun.
If you have points you might want to look into a dwell meter/tach if you don't already have one. I bought an Actron at Sears that I took back because I got my pop's old Mac-Allied tester working finally. I think the Actron will test dwell also at $24.
