If they're in good shape, 77/78 pipes are worth enough dough to get you a new 4-1 or possibly a cyclexchange.net 4-2-1. Don't chop 'em up if they're good.
To answer your question, you can make them bolt up in the front but not in the back. You'll need to put studs in your head on your '76 or older - which means you'll have to remove the "spigots".... two screws per spigot. The backside probably won't mount up so nice.
