I`m not terry, will i do?
So far theres 65 known dead, over 650 homes destroyed (that includes two whole towns) and there are still areas that the authorities cant get into.

Check here for updates

There are relief funds already with the ANZ bank donating 1 million dollars, kinda makes the governments 10 million look like a joke, but every cent helps. I`ve already given and i urge any aussies (or anyone at all) if you can spare a dollar or two donate here www.salvos.org.au

I saw it all on the TV news tonight and I was horrified. I saw a line of flame race up a hillside and the front was moving at about 100 kph. Just unreal, and all those poor people killed and that's a terrible way to go.

Then there's all the pets, livestock and the animals that live out in the bush. Snakes, wallabies, birds, you name it. All perished in a huge fireball of destruction.

My daughter lives and works in Melbourne and I don't want to think about what would happen to the city of a strong northerly wind blew the flames southwards.

Unbelievable weather over here at the moment. Queensland is over 60% flooded and the southern states are having the hottest days on record, up to 120 F, now the devastating fires.....what next..... ???

I've sent a PM to Terry 'cos he's in Victoria. The PM will go to his email. I've asked him to check in here so we know he's OK.

Melbourne itself is fine as far as i know, the main fronts were north of melbourne near bendigo.
They could be having smoke hassles but i havent heard of any fires in melbourne as such, my grandmother lives in inglewood outside of bendigo but luckily the fires missed them.
Havent i read in here that terry has family somewhere outside of melbourne?

Re my mates car, just a bit of internet humour boys. Now what's that Google Street thingy, why was he bloody parked back up  again??

OK, if Terry is in a suburb he'll be away from all the eucalyptus (gum) trees, scrubby bush and grasses that just make the place a disaster waiting to happen.

From Wikipedia
QUOTE

On warm days vapourised eucalyptus oil rises above the bush to create the characteristic distant blue haze of the Australian landscape. Eucalyptus oil is highly flammable (trees have been known to explode[4][7]) and bush fires can travel easily through the oil-rich air of the tree crowns. The dead bark and fallen branches are also flammable. Eucalypts are well adapted for periodic fires via lignotubers and epicormic buds under the bark.

Looks like we have a cool few days in the low 30's, then back up to 40 odd this weekend.

Between the floods in north queensland, the fires in new south wales and the fires in victoria this is turning into one of the worst times in recorded history for australia.
131 dead in the victorian fires, 5 dead in the floods (one young lad taken by a croc)  and luckily none dead (that we know of) in the new south wales fires

edit

This was posted a short while ago on ninemsn.com.au, shows how much this has touched folks here

A statement from the Red Cross said that at 6.30pm (AEDT) on Monday, the fund had received $7.9 million from more than 45,500 website and phone donations.

Similarly, the Salvation Army's bushfire appeal had received $2 million in just one day, and expected it to hit $3 million by Tuesday.

"We've cracked the $2 million mark. It's an unprecedented outpouring of goodwill never seen before in our living memories," Salvation Army spokesman Pat Daley said.

"It's really touched a nerve in the Australian community."

Big businesses has pledged more, with Tabcorp leading the donations at $2 million.

The country's four big banks - ANZ, Commonwealth, National Australia and Westpac - have contributed $1 million each.

Many companies, including Telstra, which has so far pledged $500,000, are also donating services, such as free phone diversions.

Australia's sporting organisations are also getting involved.

An appeal will run throughout Tuesday night's one-day cricket international between Australia and New Zealand in Adelaide, while revenue from tickets sold to the game from Monday onwards will be donated to a Commonwealth Bank Appeal.

The Australian players will donate all their match fees from the fixture to the bushfire appeal, while Cricket Australia has contributed $100,000 and the South Australian Cricket Association has pledged $25,000.

The AFL has rescheduled a pre-season Cup clash between the Western Bulldogs and Essendon from Darwin to Melbourne on Friday night, with all proceeds to go to the Victorian government's appeal fund.

The Nine Network will hold a telethon on Thursday night to raise funds. It will be hosted by Eddie McGuire.

Meanwhile, legendary singer Leonard Cohen, Paul Kelly, AEGLive UK and The Frontier Touring Company have announced their intention to donate $200,000.

Last I remember, Terry is still in the reserves alright. So, he might well be caught up in working with the fires. I heard this morning that there were 400 fires now. :( That is just terrible about how this has cropped up and taken so many lives while destroying so much property and all. So, does anyone know if any of our members or their families are affected by all this? I shudder to think about all of the people and animals who have been affected by this and ALL of the destruction as well. So very sad indeed! :(
