Velocity question??
« on: February 14, 2009, 04:11:53 PM »
Hi,
Found a great deal locally for a set of 400F Velocity stacks, and I was wondering, is there
anything else I could use instead of those micro fine screens that they supply??

I know they won't keep my engine that clean, so I was wondering if I can use some kind of a
foam element instead??

Has anyone else have good results with the Velocity stacks??

And of course, I will be rejetting...Its still in its stages of a Real Racer!!

Thanks for the help

Once you stuff foam inside a velocity stack, you defeat their purpose.  They're great for racing and the "really cool factor", but besides that.....

but then you said...."And of course, I will be rejetting...Its still in its stages of a Real Racer!!"
Please explain.

During Summer break, the bike will have it's head flowed, and a future Yoshi pipe installed.

Still debating whether to cam it or not. If I cam it, it will need harder valve springs, valves relapped, and a HD cam chain
installed.

I should have said Street Racer!!! ;)

It will be used for Saturday rides through town.

Now, that I think about it, will using the screens really affect the engine by much??

I've seen many using them on there CB750 for long trips across the US even.....

Thanks for the reply

what if you put something like a k&n pre-cleaner on there?  those work pretty well and filter out even more crap than the screens right?  or are they just mainly used to keep water out?

Well, if you ride on dusty roads or encounter a sand storm... you're going to be pulling abrasive into your cylinders. This is obviously not a great situation.
Race bikes run for relatively short times before being rebuilt, noise levels are allowed that would be prohibited on public highways (although we all know how such rules are ignored), and racetracks are relatively clean compared to many public roads.
The screens keep out larger stones and such. They don't filter out dust. They also help extinguish flames from a carb backfire, having flames shooting out under your fuel tank is unadvisable.
Current designs on sportbikes have a large airbox with what are effectively velocity stacks inside, some have variable length systems to tune the engine for power at differing RPMs even. The stock 400F system isn't really like this, and is basically a bit of plumbing to take air from the filter to the carbs... but the carbs have been set up for the resulting airflow. The stock filter and particularly the airbox intake snorkel limit flow considerably - pods or stacks will really help a "built" engine breathe. I would go with pods on a street racer. They are a bit quieter than stacks and the K&N ones are pretty good filters.

I just typed "velocity stack filter" into the tech forum search engine and came up with several informative threads on this exact subject.

Crap!!! I only typed in "velocity".

Sorry fellas....but thanks for the input....I really wanted to go with the velocity stacks, but it's
against my better judgment.

I'll probably go with K&N's. I know a buddy who has a set.

Cheers

my opinion...

stacks are for racers... the guys that regularly clean their carbs or intend to rebuild engines regularly from running stacks or otherwise thrashing bikes somehow.   ;)

proper engine maintenance and upkeep does not include riding or running your vehicle w/out proper air filtration.

having said that... if its not dusty or rainy where you live... maybe it won't matter, other than a peppier bike.   ;D 8) ;D

I posted this question not that long ago too.  The end result came to if you want filtering get pods, if you want a dirty engine and performance go with the velocity stacks.  If you put real filters in your velocity stacks you will likely wind up reducing air flow so much that you would get better flow by just going with the pods.

I like the look of stacks, but I don't want the crap in my motor, so I know where you're coming from.

Anyone know of a product that goes over the K&N pods incase of rain? I know Harley has a screaming eagle exposed air filter in which it has a little panty-hose type cover that can go over it and keep light rain out but still let air in. Do they make such a product for the little mini filters? I do lots of mountain riding and you never know when a rain storm can hit and theres no where to take cover. Hell, I wonder if a cut up pantyhose might work.

I just cant risk the exposed filters without some kind of barrier to protect from the rain. I ride my bike too much to worry about the weather.

yes... panty hose will work.
just make sure you borrow some previously worn from your girl so it doesn't seem so weird.   ;)

no really, my uni filter wasn't happy in my zx7r so i ripped out all the fuzzy stuff and all that remained was a metal screen and plastic frame... i took the foot of some of my girl's hosiery  ;) and stretched it over the filter... i originally put two layers but after the dyno i pulled one layer off.  it is a fine enough mesh that i feel safe in saying that it still has an air filter.  i use k&n spray oil on it and have run it a few thousand miles by now.  no problems and cleaning is a breeze.

I'm interested in the answer to this since I'm planning on running pods, though I think I know the answer is a "no", but I'd still like to hear from the more experienced folks.  Wouldn't putting something waterproof around your pods reduce air flow and this throw your engine off since the carbs would have been theoretically tuned for full airflow as opposed to the more restrictive flow that would result from shielding them?
