Recent purchase '73 CB175
« on: February 02, 2009, 12:17:36 PM »
I picked up a '73 CB175 that is in pretty good shape and has been in storage a long time. Its been in storage at least 2-3 years with no oil in the engine as well. I am wondering what steps I should take to get a bike going that has sat for so long? My biggest concern is not damaging the engine. Any damage prevention steps would be most helpful. I searched but could not find a related thread.

A few items on the to do list are:
1) change plugs
2) change oil and squirt some oil down the cylinder holes.
3) clean carbs

Thanks in advance!

Well i changed the oil and got her running. She didnt want to stay running but I was using a poorly charged battery. It did seem to run descent given the poor battery but I did notice the left side exhaust header not heating up. Does this mean I have a piston shot? I still need to pull the carbs off and do some routine maintenance like points and valve gab.

Initial thoughts?

Seems your heading in the right direction.

You say you've changed the plugs, but even new plugs can be duff. Take the left plug out put it back in the HT lead and lay it against the cyl head. Give the kick starter a few swings and see if you can see a nice fat spark. I would also try swaping the plugs over as well and see what happens then.

Good luck and I hope I'm not teaching me granny to suck eggs
The older I get the faster I used to be!!!!

I tore the carbs apart. way easy compared to my old cb550. Cleaned them up. threw them back on and now she is running sweet. Now to find some parts. I need a sweet tank / seat combo and some exhaust.

Anybody have any info on aftermarket exhaust for CB175? Is the only option making your own exhaust?

If you have the headers you could just find some cheap slip on mufflers and fab up some mounts.

That bike is great. I found this one in the back of a business about a mile from my house. These are great around town, but not so good over 45.

The 175's are a blast to ride. I had mine out today for a ride. A bit cold here in New Hmpshire but the bike ran great.
