Anyone seen this Accell Ignition for 4s?
« on: February 11, 2009, 08:54:10 AM »
Looking through old mags and see that Accell built what they called a Superplate or Superbreaker. Quite similar to Maxi-Dwell, and they built them for a lot of 4 cyl bikes.

I did see the old ads for Maxi-Dwell and noticed that they claim 20,000 plus miles on yor point sets. I did find them to be way less adjusting & longer lived, than stock points..

Hmmm a points saver.  Could this be something similar to the Hondaman Points Amplifier?
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

naw, they just used Chevy points, they are built different than the short Honda ones. They did use solid state condensers on the one I run, they are about the size of a Chicklet, and mine lasted 20 years..

Hmmm,.. I worked at a Honda dealer in the 70's and never heard of the accell units? I have a couple maxi-dwells and love them, especially the one with the built in timing light.

what does a maxi dwell look like?  I have never seen one.  I have never seen a complete Accell unit...only pieces.

The Maxi-Dwell is very similar to the stock points plate, but uses Chevy V8 points and a small capacitor.  It also has a built-in timing light.  There is a deal on a Maxi-Dwell on e-Bay now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280310979102

I have one on my 1977 750K and really like it, although I have nothing to compare it to.  Nor have I done any dyno runs or electrical measures to verify if it provides any better performance than a stock points plate.  To me it simply makes it easier to time, the points are heavy duty, and points are cheaper and easier to find than stock.

And they last a very long time..

The Maxi, a bit surprisingly does not allow second set of points to move independent of the 1st. It seems to work well in spite of this.

The Accell I think has a moveable second set. I was thinking, since it was a large company that sold other bike stuff, there should be a few out there?

Although the Maxi-Dwell does not come with the ability to move the second set of points independent of the first, I made an easy fix.  Simply drill out the rivets and replace them with small self-tapping screws.  Or you could tap the hole and use machine screws.  With this, you can loosen the screws a little, adjust, and then tighten them down again.

Damn, I missed it! I always wanted one to add to my aftermarket ignition collection, if anyone has one they want to sell, let me know?

Personally, my favorite is my Martek 440, it's done service in 3 CB750's and a Suzuki GS750, and is still going strong after 30+ years.

When I had it in the GS750 (I took it out before I sold the bike) I could get that bike to happily idle at 250 RPM, such was the power of the mighty Martek! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)

Aren't all non-variable capacitors solid state?
