I think I got the wrong one...
« on: February 11, 2009, 04:09:07 PM »
While reassembling, and working on my bike today I decided to mount my carbs so I could see how much extra space I have to work with.  I also decided to hook up the throttle cables while I was at it so I could check operation as I tried to dream up my electrical box, when I realized that I think I got the wrong pull cable.

The cable was from a 72 750, I have a 74 for the most part.  Well this cable has about 4 and a half inches of cable past the end of the housing, which seems to be way to much for my application.  Me thinks the cables are not interchangeable, can anyone shed some light on this for me please.

Thanks

Do you have stock bars, or clubmans?
There is going to be some extra length, as some slack is needed for normal operation....

I have decided to go with drag bars on this bike.  And i do have plenty of slack and have them run to use up as much as i can.  They are stock length cables.  I am,also using an aftermarket Emgo throttle handle.  The push cable seems to be fine but when I hook the pull cable to the carbs and then pull it thight the treaded barrel is so far behind the cable mount I can't secure it.

If pictures are needed I can get them tomorrow.  I'm just a little comfused.  Fabricators' 75 750 is sitting right next to mine and it looks like there isn't near as much cable showing as mine has (and his has clubmans on it right now, and works fine right now).

Hope this helps clear some things up.

It might be a fitzall but I doubt it.  But here is what I don't understand I thought there was only one pull and push cable for all bikes up until the carb change.  These were supposed to be off of a 72 750 but I'm not so sure.  I have tried everything I can think of to shorten the cable in the housing but nothing has worked.  I measuered a different set on a 75 750 and it had about half the length of cable showing as mine does (that had about 2 and a half inches my current cable has 4 and a half inches showing).

I got some pictures to show what I'm talking about hopefully this helps, if not I hate to say I think I need to buy another set of cables. >:(

K2 to K4 should be the same length.
New cable? Are you sure you got the right one when you bought it?
Is it the same length as the stock push/pull?

Maybe you got a later 550 cable.  They're much longer than the 750s, but the earlier 500/550 (I think) will fit a 750.

I might have gotten a 550 cable.  They were used I got them from Ebay a little while back.  When I got the bike it had no bar or controls on it so there was no cables to compare.  The push cable fits right but the pull is just way to long.  I guess with this said I have a possible cable for a 550 if anyone wants it (it's way to long for my bike).  Now back to Ebay to get a proper pull cable.  Argh ;)

Question

Do you mean the whole cable is to long
        OR
Do you mean the inner cable is too long----9called the free length)

What I was refering to was the length of the cable in the housing.  I measured the length of the cable after the housing stops it measured 4 1/2 inches.  The 75 right next mine only measured 2 1/2 inches.  They are both overall stock length but the internals are on my pull cable are double that of any other I've seen, but the push is the right lenght... go figure.

If it's too long, don't sweat it.

You can get kits to redo the ferrules on the cables. So cut it to length and attach the new end on the cable and ride off into the sunset.

But also make sure your cables are right.

If you have the pull cable swapped with the 'push' cable, I think one will seem too long. Since one goes down and under and the other just goes over top. At least I remember one of the cables seeming to have more throw than the other one? Maybe I'm just losing my mind.

But yeah, you can re-end the cable. It's worth while to have the parts around to do it in the future anyway so look at it as an investment.

Where does one find a cable repair kit? ???  This cable is worth keeping if i could put a new end on it. :)

I didn't do much searching but this is the idea here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/vw-Beetle-Buggy-Bus-T-3-Throttle-Cable-Barrel-Clamps-5_W0QQitemZ360058789639QQcmdZViewItem

Cheap enough and a good thing to have for those side-of-road repairs. And not always to your own bike!  ;D

Hit it with a torch and some flux and solder and you have a more or less permanent repair that you won't have to think about.

Oh, and for the home-fab inclined person, just pick up a stick of brass rod in the appropriate diameter, drill a hole, and solder it on the end of the cable. Cheap and easy.

Thanks for the tips and leads.  I have actually just purchased a new pull cable.  However I might just mess around with the old cable just to find what works as a repair.  ;)

There ya go ;); I broke my speedo cable upon removal, it was only the plastic end that fit into the speedo though not the cable and I first thought " I bet I can clean this real good and use some Lord adhesive on this".....
Mentioned it to the wife and stated that a new one was only 15 bones and she says "Just buy a new one"..... Just that easy, lord she is a good woman...
