Howdy,
I am in the process of tearing down my first engine, and replacing the gaskets. How do I best clean off the old head/cylinder gasket material, and what sealer do I use to put the new ones on. Any help would be great.

(1) Patience, Kerosene and a soft scraper
(2) NONE unless you want to bung the oilways up and have it sieze

i just talked to my mechanic about this yesterday.
he echoed exactly what bryanj posted. don't use any kind of sealant or liquid gasket on these older engines. the tolerance and fit of the components isn't as tight as it is nowadays and you'll end up with that material inside your engine bunging things up.
use the proper gaskets and tighten them down to the specified torque settings - that's it.
