Runs again in Southern Maine
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:17:07 AM »
Hi all,
My 74 CB750K model runs again! I bought the bike from the first owner in 1976 and road it until 1987. It had been in the back of the garage until this summer. After a careful carb cleaning, fresh brake fluid (the old had jelled), oil, new battery, chain and sprockets an old friend runs again. I plan to do more restoration work this winter.

This forum and the website have been a great help.

Thanks

Here is a picture of my '74 CB750 when it was new to me in 1976
It is currently black with Kerker 4 into 1 exhaust, running but in need of restoration

Last time I was in Main I took a nice early morning ride up Cadillac mountain what a blast.
Can't get there from here.

Nice to see it!  I am located in Limington, Maine.  Own a '75 CB400F and a '75 CB750F.  Sold my '76 750K to Ben Duffy here at Fairchild two years ago.  He also owns a '76CB750F.

Bought the 400F in 2003 for $75 out of the backyard of some kid who had used it for dirt bike.  Rebuilt frozen engine and stripped frame down and repainted.  Only put about 700 miles on her this year because of all the rain.  Really irritated me because it gets 55+ MPG which would have saved me a lot of $$$$ :-\

Maybe we can catch a ride together this summer.  My Church, LivingStone in Standish has a summer ride in July which features nice breakfast, then a 4 hour ride including lunch somewhere.  Open to all, even Harleys show up.  Regards!

Welcome!

I'm the lucky guy who bought Mainer4's K6 and live in Portland.   You  must put Owls Head Transportation Museum's vintage motorcycle event on your calendar.  Ride your bike there and get in free :)  Sep 5-6

All - thanks for the replies

Andy750 - below you'll see a couple pics of the bike right now.  I really am way behind on my plans for this winter. Looks like I might only get a new exhaust, tires, rims, spokes, fork seals and some aluminum polishing done. The chrome will have to wait.

With any luck I'll be riding before next winter.  Last summer I compromised a bit on looks to get some run time on the engine - the Kerker muffler is now "composite" containing a bit of aluminum flashing and some repair tape.  Sounds good at least..

I'm undecided on the exhaust replacement. I really like the sound and performance of the Kerker 4:1 but the other side looks a bit bare. On the other hand 4:4 originals are quite an investment.

Mainer4 - The ride sounds good. Let me know when they set a date.

UnCrash - Owls Head is a great destination. My real vice is aviation and they have a nice collection of planes/cars/bikes.

Joe Mfg - Mount Desert Island is a great destination. The park loop road was fun too.  The first year I had this bike I did a loop Portland -> Yarmouth Nova Scotia via ferry and rode back through NS and New Brunswick. I think it was about 1100 miles of riding.

Some more trivia - I learned to ride on a friend's old Honda 50 scooter in the woods behind his house when I was 10-12yrs old. I'm not sure what model year it was but it looked like this one: http://www.adclassix.com/ads/65honda50cc.htm  The kick starter shaft was broken off. We would put it on the center stand, select 2nd or 3rd gear and give a tug on the rear tire to start it.

My first motorcycle was a 1965 Honda CB72 Hawk 250. This bike didn't have much acceleration but had a ridiculous top speed for a 250.
Second bike was a 72 or 73 CL350K4 - I did a Nova Scotia trip on this bike too.

I still have that easy rider helmet my sister is wearing in the first picture. I think it's past its expiration date...

Nice to see your update.

I have a set of HM341's that I would swap you for your kerker.  They aren't perfect, and need just a little brazing, but if you're interested you could check them out at my place in Portland.  My muffler for my 78F cafe project is crap so I've been looking at options.

I also have a 4-2 megaphone set that is in good shape.  Probably a Mac but it's not marked.

Give me a shout via PM if you're interested.

Cheers~
