Battery and kick start

Hi,

I just bought a CB550, it is my first bike. It is running really well, but my battery won't hold a charge. The battery is brand new though. The battery was really strong when I first bought it (I killed it a bunch and had to keep restarting it), but when I got it home the battery ran out of juice when I tried to start it. Now it recharges a little but runs out of power fast, and i have ran it long enough to recharge. Has anyone had a charge problem with this bike?

Also, my kick start doesn't work? how easy/difficult/expensive would that be to fix?

read the FAQ about charging issues you need a multimeter and a wire diagram... it sounds like without looking at your bike that you have either a regulator issue or a rectifier issue or bad harness plugs going from the altinator to the harness or to the above coponents.. check out the FAQ it has great wealth of info on charging problems on these bikes.

also do a search i have posted many times on this subject and have replaced ALL the harness plugs on my bike and also put in a solid state regulator, and my own home made rectifier also check your fuse box there is prol high resistance on those old glass fuses..

Don't forget you need to keep the revs up on these for them to charge at all...something around 3000 rpms and under and you are draining the battery not charging it. I think the peak charge isn't reached until around 5500 or so.

Also, try to keep the headlight off, if you have the option.

With some of these bikes, the kickstarter won't engage with the clutch pulled in.

actually if everything is about new and your using a solid state regulator mine will charge at about 1500 and will "maintain" below that it wont "drain" thats for sure....

Yeah I know 650's need to be around 1500 rpm or higher.
No matter how fast or how far I rode, I couldn't leave her memory behind.
