Well.....according to a quick IE search:As a boy he was inspired by the exploits of Joie Chitwood, an acclaimed stunt-car driver. In an interview with The New York Times in 1974, Mr. Knievel said his first motorcycle was a Harley-Davidson, which he stole when he was 13. Three years later, his grandmother bought him a Triumph.

#2 - In the early 1970s, the Laverda 750 was marketed as the American Eagle in the U.S., and under that name was ridden by Evel Knievel in his later jumps.

And lastly: In the course of his career Evel Knievel attempted more than 300 jumps, of which 276 were sucessful



Oh and btw, I have no idea if any of this is even remotely close to accurate as I am a little young (not by Ben's standard tho!!! to have been a "real" fan.

i remember, as a kid (younger than ben) watching his jumps on the television. i had the toys (evel knievel stunt cycle) the lunchbox as well as bedsheets and pillow cases and comforter.

The Chitwood family came to our local (but very large) county fair once or twice.  I think they're the reason I drive like I do...

q.1 (first recorded jump) a 350cc honda twin, at moses lake WA, 1965. He jumped 40ft over a box of rattlesnakes and 2 lions.
q.2 A laverda 750s was the american eagle.
q.3 he did approx 93 jumps as evel knievel (when he was famous) 1965-1980.
