Yamiya K0 Side Cover Screen Assembly
« on: February 12, 2009, 07:19:05 AM »
I finally bit the bullet and bought a set of K0 side covers (and other goodies) from Yamiya.  Usual fast delivery and quality products.  They can come with screens installed or not and I chose not because I thought it would be easier for the painter.  But the tabs that hold the screens aren't bent over like the originals to retain the screens, they stand straight up.  Are they intended to just locate the screens for glueing maybe?  Or can they be melted over?  Anyone else with experience with these?
Thanks,
Mark

My covers were original, but never had screens before while I owned it. Some of the tabs were bent over, but still had room beneath them to slip the screen under. Others were bent over so far there was no room at all.

I had the body work painted and wanted to restore the covers to include the screens. After painting, where necessary, I used a dab of silicone to secure them. So far, several years, no problems. I'm not much of a fan of permanently securing anything, so you might consider doing something similar. Others might have better ideas though.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Mark...yes, that Yamiya stuff is sure nice.  Bob has a good idea that I think will work good with the silicone.  I have attached a picture of my OEM KO side covers.  Back when I was looking for those screens Yamiya was not selling them.  I was lucky enough to find someone on the board that had a couple sets.  My covers have all the tabs in place and you can see the bend or L shape to them to hold the screens.  I was told to put some clear on them as they may get rust over a period of time.  Not sure if this is true or not but I cleared them anyway.

I'll see if I can post a picture of the tabs on the Yamiya covers.  They don't have the L-bend, they stick straight up.  Anyone else bought the Yamiya's have any comments?

I'm not sure about the tabs, but LPM makes some nice reproduction covers for the K0, as well.  I have used them on my K7 and K2.

Here is a photo of the Yamiya covers showing the tabs.  I hope you can see them OK.  By the way, I have used the LPM covers too for my K0 and they're pretty good too for a little less money.  After painting they looked great but there are no tabs and do require glueing.  I'm going to put the Yamiya ones on my sandcast and was thinking they might be slightly better quality.

I just received some K0 side covers from LPM the other day.  They are beautiful, but I noticed that they don't have any tabs at all inside to hold the screens :(

I'll post some pics this weekend when I get a chance.

it looks like those yamiya covers need a little heat applied to the tabs to bend them over, maybe from a heat gun or a wood burning tool?

I think they will fit, at worst you'll need to change out the oil tank.  K0 oil tanks were wider, or at least they stuck out from the frame more.  I'll go compare in the garage later.

So, K0 side cover snapped right onto the K1 oil tank, leaving a gap between the tank and the inside of the side cover.  You should be good to go.  However I should point out that the tank was not installed on a bike so I can't guarantee there won't be other interference, but I don't think there will be.
